1. A relation in which each element of the domain corresponds to

exactly one element of the range is a _________________.
2. A function is a set of ordered pairs (x, y) such that _________ two

4. In the case of table of values, each domain (x-value) must have
exactly ____________range (y-value).
5. A method of determining whether or not a graph represents a
function is called the ________________________________.

What’s New

LESSON PROPER. Functions are mathematical representations of

many input-output situations.
To put it simply, the function y = f(x) represents that x is the
input and y is the output. The output y depends on the value of
the input x.
Let us try to look at several examples where we can see how
this works.
1. A soft drink, snack, or stamp machine
The user puts in money, punches a specific
button, and a specific item drops into the
output slot.
The function rule is the product price. The
input is the money combined with the selected
button. The output is the product, sometimes
delivered along with coins in change, if the user
has entered more money than required by the
function rule.

2. Circumference of a circle is a function of diameter.

Students can measure the

diameter and circumference of
several round containers or lids
and record that data in a table. If
diameter is the input and

3
circumference is the output, what's the function rule?
As they divide each container's circumference by its
diameter to find that rule, they should notice a constant ratio -- a
rough approximation of pi.
The input is the diameter and the output is the circumference
of the circle.
3. Basic economics and money
math:
* A weekly salary is a function of the
hourly pay rate and the number of
hours worked. The input is the
number of hours worked and the
hourly pay rate and the output is the
weekly salary.
* Compound interest is a function of initial investment,
interest rate, and time. The input is the investment, rate of
interest and time; the output is the compound interest.
* Supply and demand: As price goes up, demand goes down.
The input may be the price and the availability of goods
(supply); the output is the demand.
4. Shadows. The length of a shadow is a
function of its height and the time of day.
Shadows can be used to find the height of
large objects such as trees or buildings;
the same function rule (ratio) by which we
compare the length of an upright ruler to
its shadow will help us find the unknown input (the height of the
large object) when we measure its shadow.
The input is the height of the object and the time of the day;
the output is the length of the shadow.
5. Distance. The distance traveled is a
function of the time. The input is the time
and the output is the distance traveled.
4
What is It

ACTIVITY. Determine the input and the output of each function.

Function Input Output

1. The amount of battery charge
of a cellphone is a function of the
number of hours of use.
2. An athlete’s shoe size is a
function of the athlete’s length of
foot.
3. The amount of water on
graduated cylinder displaced by
same-size marbles is a function
of the number of marbles.
4. The hardness of sounds one
hears is a function of his/her
distance from the source of
sound.
5. The number of text messages
that can be sent depends on the
amount of prepaid load bought.

5
What’s More

DISCUSSION. Function as representation of real-life situations.

Let us take these examples.
1. Give a function C that can represent the cost of buying x meals
if one meal costs P40.
Solution: Since each meal cost P40, then the cost function C(x) =
40x.
The cost of the meals depends on the number of ordered
meals.
2. The area of a circle A is a function of the square of its radius r
multiplied to pi (𝜋).
Solution: The formula of the area of a circle A(r) = 𝜋𝑟 2 , the area of
a circle depends on the radius.
3. Find the perimeter of a rectangle P as a function of its width, if
the length is twice the width w.
Solution: Since the formula in getting the perimeter of a rectangle
is 2l + 2w, using the given information from the situation – the
length is twice the width.
l = 2w, use 2w instead of l in the formula
Therefore, P (w) = 2(2w)+2w
P (w) = 4w + 2w
P (w) = 6w
The perimeter of the rectangle depends on the value of its
width.

6
