CHEG 2133/2133H (Fluid Mechanics) Fall 2023

Homework 6: due on Friday (Oct 20, 2023) before class. Submit through Blackboard

1. A steel pipe 2 ft in diameter carries water (density (ρ) = 62.3 lb m/ft3, viscosity (𝜇) = 1 cP) at
velocity of 15 ft/s. The steel pipe has a roughness of 0.0003 ft. If a smooth plastic liner that
reduces the inside diameter to 1.9 ft is inserted to reduce the friction, calculate the change in
pressure drop for the same volumetric flowrate.

2. Water is flowing through a 3-inch Schedule 40 steel pipe at a flow rate of 100 gpm (gallons
per minute). The pipe is being heated such that the bulk temperature of the water is 70 °F and
psi
wall temperature is 120 °F. What is the pressure drop in the system in ?
100 ft of pipe

3. Water at 70 °F is being pumped from an open storage tank to an elevated pressurized tank at
a flow rate of 30 gpm (gallons per minute). The piping system has the following
specifications:

 The bottom of the open storage tank is located 3 ft above the pump. The storage tank is
25 ft in diameter and the water level is 5 ft.
 Water exiting the open storage tank travels through a 2-in Schedule 40 iron (steel) pipe
which is the suction to the pump. This 2-in line tees off for tank drainage, but the drain
line is closed off during normal operation.
 The pump has an efficiency of 50%.
 The elevated pressurized tank is pressurized to 5 psig and is elevated 70 ft above the
pump. The pressurized tank is 15 ft in diameter and 4 ft tall.
 Water in the discharge from the pump travels through a 3-in Schedule 40 steel pipe.
 Specific pipe lengths are shown in the figure below. The piping system has a tee in the
suction line and an elbow in the discharge line. What is the size of the pump in hp?
