THEORY QUESTIONS
1.1 Classify the various types of drawings used in mechanical engineering field. Various
types of drawings used in mechanical engineering field are:
1. Machine drawing
2. Production drawing
3. Part drawing and
4. Assembly drawing

• All the dimensions and information necessary for the construction of such parts and
for the assembly of the parts are given directly on the assembly drawing.
• Separate views of specific parts in enlargements, showing the fitting of parts
together, may also be drawn in addition to the regular assembly drawing.

1.12 What is a machine shop drawing and how is it different from machine drawing?
• Rough castings and forgings are sent to the machine shop for finishing operation.
• Since the machinist is not interested in the dimensions and information of the
previous stages, a machine shop drawing frequently gives only the information
necessary for machining operation pertaining to that particular machine shop.
• Based on the same principle, one may have forge shop drawing, pattern shop
drawing, sheet metal drawing, etc.
• Whereas machine drawing is pertaining to machine parts or components presented
through a number of orthographic views, so that the size and shape of the component
is fully understood. Part drawings and assembly drawings belong to this classification.
1.13 What are patent drawings and how are they prepared?
• When new machines or devices are invented, patent drawings come into existence,
to illustrate and explain the invention.
• These are pictorial drawings and must be self-explanatory.
• It is essential that the patent drawings are mechanically correct and include complete
illustrations of every detail of the invention.
• However, they are not useful for production purposes.
• The salient features on the drawing are numbered for identification and complete
description.

PITCH LEAD
Pitch is the distance measured parallel to Lead is the distance a screw advances axially
the axis, between corresponding points on in one turn.
adjacent screw threads.
2.7 What is a multi-start thread and how it differs from a single start thread?
Multi-start threads are used wherever quick action is desired, as in fountain pens,
automobile starters, arbor press spindles, hydraulic valve spindles, etc.
2.9 What is the pitch and lead in the case of a double start thread?
For a double start thread, lead is equal to twice the pitch and no change in pitch.
2.10 What type of thread is used for the screw jack and lathe lead screw and why?
ACME threads are used for screw jack and lathe machine lead screw since the inclined sides
of the thread facilitate quick and easy engagement and disengagement.
3.1 Explain the following, indicating the symbol to be used in each case:
(a) First angle projection, (b) Third angle projection

f) CAD is used extensively in Finite element analysis.
g) CAD design is the basis for CNC program generation.
h) CAD is used to create Jigs and Fixtures
i) CAD is used for Mold Design
j) CAD design is the basis for computer aided process plan (CAPP).
k) CAD is used for making instructional videos for service engineers.
l) Nowadays CAD is extensively used for accelerated new product development and
testing in virtual reality.
9. In Solid edge, how do you lock a plane or surface on which the sketch is to be
made?
Select any one 3D Sketching tool,
Place the cursor on the plane or surface on which you want to create a new sketch
You will notice the plane or surface is highlighted with orange color line, and
You will notice a LOCK symbol and F3
Then hit the lock symbol with cursor, or press F3
You will notice a dark orange rectangle on the plane or surface you want to sketch
also you will notice on the right top corner of the screen, a LOCK symbol and F3,
which means the plane or surface you want to sketch is locked.
