INTRODUCTION

A. SITUATION ANALYSIS

The senior high school students of San Fabian National High School keep on wearing

improper uniform despite of having rules and regulations in their school.

First, they think that wearing improper uniform makes them more confident,

cool, and presentable but the truth is that they look like they are outsiders. They know

that wearing improper uniform kind of “styles” which is not allowed inside the school,

but still do.

Second, the teachers, head teachers, principal, and even the student council keep

on reminding the students that they must wear their proper uniform to look more

presentable inside the classroom.

The students keep on wearing those improper uniform because some of the role

models are violating the rules in wearing proper uniform, so they think that it is okay to

also wear improper uniform, and some of the students is doing this because they follow

what is in the trend fashion, they are being influenced in what is the social media trend

fashions.

Some are not comfortable in their uniform so they choose to have their punishment

than to wear their uniforms. The students must follow/obey the rules and regulations in

their school because it can train them on how to be an effective follower, and they also

can use it whatever career they might be entering in the future.

REVIEW ON RELATED LITERATURE

Having been at the forefront of school wear since its introduction in the 16th

century, the majority of private schools and education establishments set great store by

their adopted uniforms. At the UK’s most prestigious independent schools, uniforms

often date back hundreds of years, with today’s students expected to wear similar attire to

those worn centuries ago.

It’s a similar story with public schools too, although these uniforms have seen

drastic change since the early 19th century. This suggests that the UK has one of the

strictest approaches to school wear of any country on Earth, and the statistics do support

this with four in five secondary schools enforcing a full school uniform.

Given that most schools in the UK are in favour of retaining school uniforms, this

ultimately raises questions about the positive impact school leaders believe uniforms

have on today’s young scholars. Here we’ll explore this issue further, and find out how

exactly school uniforms affect student attitudes in the classroom.

It may sound a tad naïve to assume that clothing can improve child discipline, but

many experts believe that school uniforms do have a positive influence on behaviour. In

his research paper, Dressed for Success, Scott Imberman conducted a study into the

effects school uniforms have on behaviour and attendance, concluding that modest

improvements were visible in schools which enforce a full uniform. But why is this the

case?

Many school leaders share the view that, by wearing a school uniform, students

gain skills in presentation which ultimately lead to improved discipline in the classroom.

6
Uniforms can also improve attendance rates, and prevent students from forming gangs

and groups that could result in further bad behaviour.

While those critical of school uniforms have been quoted as saying they offer a

‘quick fix for a range of problems’, it’s difficult to argue with the notion on that school

wear does boost professionalism in the classroom. And it isn’t just establishments

themselves which benefit from this; school uniform experts, SWI, believe that students

are empowered to succeed by their uniform.

They said: “The act of putting on a uniform in the morning adds occasion to the

day ahead, much like a sportsman before a big game. Uniforms endow young students

with a sense of motivation and purpose, help to ready them for life beyond the school

gates.”

In the 16th century when the school uniform was first introduced, its purpose was

not to improve discipline or bolster professionalism — it was to level the socioeconomic

playing field and ensure that every child was treated as equal in the eyes of their peers,

something of invaluable importance in today’s independent school system.

By ensuring that pupils begin their education on an equal footing, each child is

judged on his or her character, personality and academic merits — not on which designer

brands they can afford. This ultimately creates a more rounded and equal school

community, and one in which students are free to express themselves without fear of

rejection and put-downs.

Attaining complete inclusivity in schools is something every school leader hoped

that achieve, and one of the simplest ways to do this, according to some educational

experts, is to adopt a school uniform. School wear generates a tangible sense of identity

7
and belonging among pupils, and subsequently helps to create a safe environment both in

and out of the classroom. According to former education secretary, Ed Balls, school wear

can be likened to that of the uniforms worn by groups like Scouts and Guides. Why?

Uniforms, Balls says, offer a sense of inclusion and community, helping the wearer feel a

sense of acceptance, belonging and identity. So, where do you sit in the great school

uniforms debate? Do you believe they have a positive impact in schools, or do you think

it’s time for change? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the issue.

Most children remember the first time their parents allowed them to dress

themselves in anything they wanted to wear that day. Writer Gary Stein from the Sun

Sentenial says, “there is nothing wrong with kids figuring out that a certain shirt and pair

of shorts is or isn't OK for school. Will that create some embarrassing fashion crimes?

Without a doubt. It's called part of growing up." This allows children to make their own

choices and develop a sense of individuality. That sense of individuality, however, can be

tarnished during the school day through khaki pants, colored polos and ties.

Being too similar to others can make individuals feel deprived of their

distinctiveness as unique individuals, which might keep them from thinking or saying

what they want. The 1960’s, also known as the burgeoning baby boom generation, was

the time of growing disposable income. This became a focal point of all clothing

marketers, and fashion became a means of student expression and identity. Individuals

begin the process of finding out who they are at a young age, and with uniforms in the

public school system, this process is significantly slowed and substituted with

conformity and sameness. A child’s personality shines through his or her choice of outfit

and how they pair certain pieces together. Colors, patterns, and graphics are a great

8
indicator of a child’s interests and beliefs. School uniforms deny students the option to

express themselves through their choice in clothing, and for thoughts and ideas may

never be heard. In 1969, a case of two high school students, John F. Tinker, 15,

Christopher Eckhardt, 16, and junior high student Mary Beth Tinker, 13, were part of a

group of parents and students who had met in the Eckhardt home in December of 1965.

The group decided to express its disapproval of the war in Vietnam by wearing black

armbands throughout the holiday season. Before the students could protest, the principals

of the Des

Moines schools heard and adopted a dress code policy that forbade any student from

wearing an armband to class. If a student was asked to remove an armband and refused,

he or she would be suspended immediately. On 16 December 1965, the defendants wore

the armbands to school and were suspended from each of their respective schools. The

parents of the children sued the school district and their case eventually making its way to

the US Supreme Court.

Similar instances have occurred when schools deny students of making a point

and standing up for what they believe in. The First Amendment of the United

States Constitution goes out to protect the rights to freedom of religion and freedom of

expression from government interference, so why are students denied that right in

classrooms and hallways of their schools every day?

During an economically strenuous time, many families are on a “tight budget”.

As best as they can, parents work to provide their children with a place to sleep at night,

food

on the table, and clothes on their backs. On top of the clothes children must wear outside

9
of school, the cost of a school uniform set can burn a hole through parents’ pockets.

Experts believe that it increases the amount of clothing parents will have to buy for their

children because the

children will still need clothing for the time they are not in school. Uniforms can be more

expensive for families who rely on hand-me-down clothing from friends and family or

purchase clothes from local thrift stores. In a society, as of 2011, where one in two

Americans have fallen into poverty or are barely getting by on earnings that classify as

low income, another wardrobe set can be out of the question. This could ultimately result

in these families’ children to go without an education because uniforms cannot be

supplied.

It is the Parents’ or Guardians’ responsibility to ensure that they get the exact &

correct uniform specification & design from the school, and see to it that the uniform is

made exactly according to specification! If the Parents or Guardians fail to do this, then

they are the ones who are responsible for ANY HARM that the child may encounter

when that child is prevented from entering the school & sent home!! Parents, Guardians,

& Students must understand and accept that it is the Principal, along with his/her board,

who RUNS the school, and NOT them! Ergo, they must be willing to bear the

consequences for usurping the school’s Dress Code and Rules! The school is ONLY

responsible for the care & protection of students the second they enter the school’s

perimeter fencing; and ergo, cannot be responsible for students who were locked out &

prevented from entering the school’s compound!

This is how the transfer of responsibility for students work: The Parents or Guardians are

responsible for the protection of the student while the student is at Home.

10
The Student, using the training from his/her Parents or Guardians, is temporarily

responsible for his/her protection & safe travel to school; and the Drivers of Public

vehicle are responsible for safely commuting the students in their vehicles. The school’s

Administrators & Teachers are Fully responsible for the Students’ safety & protection the

second the students enter the school’s compound, lasts right until the students leave the

school compound at the end of the school session. The transfer of responsibility then goes

in the reverse order for students leaving school route to their home.

Hence, it is only an irrational excuse for unruly minded Parents, Guardians, &

Adult citizens to say that it is the school’s Administrators who are to be blamed for any

harm of students who were locked out of school due to improper uniform! Students need

to learn from early that it is the same way they will be locked out of work places & other

buildings if they refuse to abide by the Dress Code & Rules! Ok?? However, the school’s

Administrators could try a Humiliating Punishment Strategy proposed by a Female

Citizen, which is to make those unruly students wear extremely long & big uniforms on

the compound for the day, every time they wear improper uniform to school.
