STUDY USES SEISMIC NOISE TO TRACK UNDERGROUND

WATER LEVELS
Tim Clements, a Harvard graduate student working in the lab
of Assistant Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences Marine
Denolle, is the lead author of a recent study that used seismic
noise to measure the size and water levels of underground
aquifers in California.
Researchers were able to measure the water depth of the
San Gabriel Valley aquifer, located just outside Los Angeles, to
within a centimeter
by measuring the
waves traveling
through it.
While the study
wasn’t the first to
hit upon the idea of
using seismic noise
to study ground-
water, earlier ef-
forts were hampered because they relied on a signal that was
relatively weak in comparison to environmental factors like
temperature and pressure.
The system could also be a useful tool for anyone involved
in water resource management, Clements said, because it can
give them a moment-to-moment view of precisely what is
happening in an underground aquifer. The technique could even
be used to track whether and how aquifers rebound following
precipitation, to understand geological changes that might occur
as water is pumped out, and to monitor the health of an aquifer
over time. WW

COLUMBUS TO UPDATE WATER MASTER PLAN

In the next 30-plus years, Central Ohio is projected to see as
many as one million new residents. Smart Columbus, the smart
city initiative for the City of Columbus and the Columbus Region,
has emerged as a primary driver for growth and change. With
this additional growth comes the needs to address the region’s
water supply.
To that end, the City of Columbus is embarking on an initiative

to update its Comprehensive Water Master Plan. Once complete, the plan will provide a roadmap for addressing new infrastruc-
ture, redundancy measures and needed enhancements to the city’s water distribution system, while accounting for projected
population growth and economic development.
Selected by the city to assist in the update, Arcadis will conduct a broad assessment of the entire system and develop recom-
mendations to fully account for current and future demand beyond the current plan’s 2040 horizon. This includes: population
and planning projections; service area growth; raw water supply and demand; use of efficiency measures and smart water solutions
to source supply and treatment needs; evaluation of size, treatment, transmission and redundancy alternatives for a potential
fourth water treatment plant; and updating the city’s drought management strategy. WW

monitoring lake levels to prevent flooding is a time-

the nearly four-month rainy season.
“Maintaining balanced water levels is critical to avoid flooding
in residential areas and conserve enough water for the dry

Lakes and Stormwater Division. “Our technician has to drive

Bye-Bye Buildup
Peristaltic metering pump solves biological buildup
challenge in industrial water reuse application

I
n Orlando, Fla., a natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle electric-
generating plant with a capacity to generate 656 megawatts
includes two natural gas-fired combustion turbines, two
heat-recovery steam generators and a steam turbine.
In a condensing turbine, the thermal energy of steam is
converted into mechanical power, which is converted into electric
power by a generator. Any biological buildup within the con-
denser would greatly reduce the efficiency of the equipment
producing steam, meaning less mechanical power. To combat
that, the plant was injecting 12.5 percent sodium hypochlorite
(250-300 GPD) into the wastewater to prevent biological buildup
within the water tubes of the condenser.
To do that, the plant selected Blue-White’s CHEM-FEED®
Skid System equipped with two of the company’s Pro-Series®
Flex-Pro® Model A3 peristaltic metering pumps. The skid system
includes a calibration cylinder and Plast-O–Matic components

pump head, however, eliminates gas or air accumulation head; encompasses a full chemical feed design, which is less expensive
than purchasing the components separately, and the skid system
is far easier and less time consuming to install, with no in-house
engineering team needed.
In addition, the skid’s dual pump design used in this application
offered an option to include an emergency back-up pump in
case downtime was required on the primary pump.

RESULTS
The electrical plant is extremely pleased with the performance
of the Flex-Pro pumps and CHEM-FEED skid. They considered
the ease of installation and the ability to receive the chemical feed
skid system via UPS to be of excellent value. The system has
exceeded expectations. Based on previous installations with similar
chemicals and pressure ranges of less than 20 PSI, the Flex-Pro
A3 peristaltic pumps are expected to see a minimum of 7,000-

Intelligent effort
In 1819 John Ruskin, a prominent English thinker, said:

“ Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent

effort... When you pay too much, you lose a little money, that's
all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything,
because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing
it was bought to do.
Here at Balmoral Tanks we relate to this fully. The range of quality installations
spanning the Americas, Europe, Middle and Far East is evidence of a growing
portfolio of discerning customers that also concur.

one of the state’s most visited and popular tourist attractions.
Hokuli’a is a 1,260-acre high-end golf resort and 500-home
residential community under development on a Kona Coast hillside
with commanding views of sunsets and its pristine three-mile
beach. Preserving the historical heritage of Hokuli’a is a major
consideration. Hawaiian ali‘i (royalty) established their first cere-
monial centers here and among the number of culturally significant
sites are the remains of Hokukano Village, an ancient community;
Pu’u Ohau, a sacred location of burial sites; and Nawawa Bay, a
water access point where the first Hawaiians launched and landed
canoes. Like Kohana’iki, it is installing All-Terrain Sewer exclusively

replace cesspools and septic systems threatening its coral, ac-
cording to a feasibility study by Clean Water for Reefs Puakō,
a community-driven project.
“Local impacts such as leaky cesspools and septic tanks release
raw sewage along the Puakō shoreline,” the group noted. “This
effluent contains nutrients and pathogens which can cause
human health issues and negatively impact the Puakō Reef.”
Among the benefits of an ATS conversion, the group said it
would “prevent an estimated 19 million gallons of Puakō and
Waialea Bay wastewater from entering the shoreline each year.”
Financially, the ATS would be the “least costly solution over a
40-year life cycle compared with other options.” WW
