OBJECTIVE: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to express an action

that started in the recent past and continues into the present.
LANGUAGE FOCUS: Present Perfect Continuous
TOPIC: Hobbies and Interest
PROCEDURE: (4-A METHOD)
Motivational What have you been doing as a hobby recently? How long have you
Questions been pursuing that particular interest? Have you been exploring any
new hobbies or activities lately?

Activity State an action that you have started doing in your free time and
have been planning on accomplishing.

(Call at least 5 students and make them write their varied answers
on the board).

Analysis Do these actions have a possibility to continue happening for an


amount of period of time? How did these actions indicate length
of time? (Students will have varied answers.)

Abstraction: (This phase of a 4-A method is the


discussion of Present perfect continuous. This is where the teacher should explain the
details.)

Present Perfect Continuous Tense is used to express an action which started before now (or in the past)
and has continued up until now (or into the present). The action may not be finish at that time and also this
action may still be continuing or may have just finished.

To make an affirmative we use the following formula: Example


Subject + have\has + been + present participle I + have + been + learning + to play guitar.
(verb+ing) + the rest of the sentence I have been learning to play guitar.
To shorten the sentences, we use a contraction of the

subject and “Has\Have”.
I’ve been learning to play guitar.

She’s been practicing guitar for about 6

Anna’s been teaching English all morning.
To make a negative sentence, we use the following formula: Example
Subject + have\has + not + been + present participle Julie + has + not + been + taking + her

In order to ask questions, we use the following formula:
Has + she + been + learning to sew her own

 Above all make sure students are clear on which types of contexts or situation require the
use of the present perfect continuous tense.
