PROBABILITY

RANDOM VARIABLES AND PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION :

1. There are 4 cards numbered 1, 3, 5 and 7, one number on one card. Two cards are drawn at random
without replacement. Let X denotes the sum of the numbers on the two drawn cards. Find the mean and
variance of X.
2. In a game, a man wins Rs.5 for getting a number greater than 4 and loses Rs.1 otherwise, when a fair
die is thrown. The man decided to throw a die thrice but to quit as and when he gets a number greater
than 4. Find the expected value of the amount he wins/loses.
3. Three card are drawn successively with replacement from a well shuffled pack of 52 cards. Find the
probability distribution of the number of spades. Hence find the mean of the distribution.
4. Two numbers are selected at random (without replacement) from positive integers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
Let X denotes the larger of the two numbers obtained. Find the mean and variance of the probability
distribution of X.
5. From a lot of 15 bulbs which include 5 defectives, a sample of 2 bulbs is drawn at random (without
replacement). Find the probability distribution of the number of defective bulbs.
6. Three cards are drawn at random (without replacement) from a well shuffled packs of 52 playing cards.
Find the probability distribution of number of red cards. Hence find the mean of the distribution.
7. A class has 15 students whose ages are 14, 17, 15, 14, 21, 17, 19, 20, 16, 18, 20, 17,16, 19 and 20 years.
One student is selected in such a manner that each has the same chance of being chosen and the age X
of the selected student is recorded. What is the probability distribution of the random variable X? Find
the mean of X.

INDEPENDENT EVENTS :

1. A die, whose faces are marked 1,2,3 in red and 4,5,6 in green, is tossed. Let A be the event “number
obtained is even” and B be the event “number obtained is red”. Find if A andB are independent events.
2. Probability of solving specific problem independently by A and B are 1/2 and 1/3 respectively. If both
try to solve the problem independently, find the probability that
(i) The problem is solved (ii) Exactly one of them solved the problem.
3. A speaks truth in 60% of the cases, while B in 90% of the cases. In what percent of the cases are they
likely to contradict each other in stating the same fact? In the cases of contradiction do you think, the
statement of B will carry more weight as he speaks truth in more number cases than A?
4. The probability of two students A and B coming to the school in time are 3/7 and 5/7 respectively.
Assuming that the events, ‘A coming in time’ and ‘B coming in time’ are independent, find the
probability of only one of them coming to the school in time.
