LINEAR EQUATION IN TWO VARIABLES – ANSWER KEY

NAME: CLASS: IX SEC: DATE:

Answer key (Linear equations in two variable)

1. B
2. B
3. C
4. D
5. B
6. A
7. D
8. A) x+ y = 36 B) (0,36) (36,0) C) No D) Yes E) (36,0) (0,36)
9. If the points A (3, 5) and B (1, 4) to lie on the graph of line ax + by = 7 must satisfy the given
equation
So for x = 3 and y = 5
3a + 5b = 7 ................. (1)
for x =1 and y = 4
a + 4b = 7
⇒ a = 7 – 4b ................ (2)
putting the value of a from (2) in (1) we get
3(7 – 4b) + 5b = 7
21 – 12b + 5b = 7
–7b = 7 – 21 = – 14

Putting the value of b in (2) we get

a=7–4×2=–1
Hence the values of a and b are – 1 and 2

10. 3(2k-1) -5(k)-7=0

6k-3-5k-7=0
6k-5k 3-7=0
k-10=0
k=10
11. For x = 5, y = 5, therefore, (5, 5).
For x = 3, y = 7, therefore, (3, 7)
12.
Given that, a library has a fixed per day charge for the first three days and an additional charge for each
day thereafter.
The fixed charges are Rs. x for three days
and the additional charges are Rs. y per day.
Also, Arushi paid Rs. 27 for a book she kept for 7 days.
Since the book was kept for 7 days, fixed charges will be applicable for each of the first three days and an
additional charge of Rs. y per day for the remaining days.
X + (7−3) y=27
⇒ x+4y=27

13.
Let the smaller number = y
and larger number = x
Given, the difference between two numbers is 3
=> x - y = 3
When x = 0, y = -3
When y = 0, x = 3
So, the two coordinates are (0, -3) and (3, 0)
Now, the graph is shown as below:

14. 2ax + 3by = 18

⇒ At (1, 1), 2a + 3b = 18
5ax +3by = 15
⇒ At (1, 1) , 5a + 3b = 15
Put the two equations together:
2a + 3b = 18 ------------------- [ 1 ]
5a + 3b = 15 ------------------- [ 2 ]
Find a:
[ 1 ] - [ 2 ]:
-3a = 3
a = -1 ---------------------Sub into equation [ 1 ]
Find b:
2a + 3b = 18
2( -1 ) + 3b = 18
-2 + 3b = 18
3b = 20
b = 20/3

15. If the points A(1, 2), B(–1, –16) and C(0, –7) lie on the graph of the linear equation y = 9x – 7
then the these points should satisfy the equation of the given line.
Let us check it:
For point A(1, 2),
Here, x = 1 and y = 2, therefore
y = 9x – 7
⇒ 2 = 9 (1) – 7
⇒2=2
Thus, point A lies on the given line.
For point B(–1, –16)
Here, x = –1 and y = –16, therefore
y = 9x – 7
⇒ –16 = 9 (–1) – 7
⇒ –16 = –16
Thus, point B lies on the given line.
For point C(0, –7),
Here, x = 0 and y = –7, therefore
y = 9x – 7
⇒ –7 = 9 (0) – 7
⇒ –7 = –7
Thus, point C lies on the given line.
Hence, all three points A, B and C lie on the line y = 9x – 7.

16.

From the graph, we have when boys are 20, girls are 30.

17.
From the graph, P(4, 2) is a point where
abscissa is twice the value of ordinate.

18.
The point will lie on the linear equation only if the coordinates satisfy the equation
2(x+1)+3(y−2) =13

19. The given equation of line is

6 b x + a y = 24
As, given the line passes through (2,0) and (0,2).
6 × b × 2 + a × 0= 24
12 b= 24
→ b=2 →→→ [Dividing both sides by 12]
6 × b×0 + a × 2 = 24
2 a = 24
Dividing both sides by 2, we get
a = 12
So, a= 12 and b= 2.
20. Present age of Ravi = y years
Present age of Aarushi = x years
Seven years ago,
(𝑥 − 7) × 7 = (𝑦 − 7)
7𝑥 − 49 = 𝑦 − 7
7𝑥 − 𝑦 = 42 ----------- eq.1
Three years from now,
(𝑥 + 3) × 3 = 𝑦 + 3
3𝑥 + 9 = 𝑦 + 3
3𝑥 − 𝑦 = −6 --------eq.2
Solving eq.1 and 2 we get x=12, y=42

To represent graphically find solution of the equation

7𝑥 − 𝑦 = 42

y 7 14 21
x 7 8 9

3𝑥 − 𝑦 = −6

y 18 24 27
x 4 6 7
