Multiplying numbers up to 3-digit numbers by up to 2-digit numbers without

or with regrouping

Good morning!
Today, you are going to learn the steps and process in multiplying
numbers. Are you ready for this lesson?

Background Information for Learners

In multiplication, the first factor is the multiplicand, the second factor is

the multiplier, and the answer is called product.

WITHOUT REGROUPING

Problem Opener:
There are 210 people who visited the carnival last week. If each
person paid Php 25 for the entrance ticket, how much did the carnival
earned last week?

Understanding:
To solve the problem above, we have to do multiplication. In
multiplication, the numbers 210 and 25 are called the factors. They are the
numbers to be multiplied and the answer that we will get is called the product.
The number sentence is 210 x 25 = N where N is the total earned in the
carnival last week.
Find: 210 x 25 =

Arranging the factors vertically, we will have

210 1st factor(multiplicand)

PhP 25 2nd factor (multiplier)

Let us first multiply the first factor by the ones digit of the second factor.
Note that multiplication here is performed from right to left.

210 1st factor

X 25 2nd factor
1 050

The number 1 050 is called a partial product. Let us now multiply the first
factor by the tens digit of the second factor. Put zero below the zero in 1 050
since we are done multiplying by ones digit.
210 1st factor
X 25 2nd factor
Partial products 1 050 = 5 x 210
4 200 = 2 x 210

Then, add the partial products.

210 1st factor

X 25 2nd factor
Partial product
Partial products 1 050 = 5 x 210
4 200 = 2 x 210
5 250 product

Therefore, the carnival earned Php 5 250 last week.

To multiply whole numbers, start with the least to the largest place value
(right to left). Make sure that the digits are in the correct place value.

For further understanding:

a. 133 133
X 12 You may omit the zeros but x 12
266 make sure
You mayto place
omit the
the zero 266
+ 1330 rightmost digit in the + 133
1 596 correct place. 1 596

Thus, the product is 1596.

b. 321 321
x 11 x 11
321 321
+ 3210 + 321
3 531 3 531

Thus, the product is 3 531.

c. 410 410
x 31 x 31
410 410
+ 12300 + 1230
12 710 1 2 710

Thus, the product is 12 710.

WITH REGROUPING

Problem Opener:
This week, the carnival has new shows. Many people buy tickets
andwatch the shows. There are 958 people. If a ticket still cost Php 25,
how much did the carnival earn this week?

Understanding:
Find: 958 x 25 =
Arranging the factors vertically, we will have

958 1st factor(multiplicand)

X 25 2nd factor (multiplier)

Let us first multiply the first factor by the ones digit of the second factor.
Note that multiplication here is performed from right to left.
24

958 1st factor

X 25 2nd factor
4 790 = 5 x 958
The number 4 790 is called a partial product. Let us now multiply the first
factor by the tens digit of the second factor. Put zero below the zero in 4 790
since we are done multiplying by ones digit.
11
24

958 1st factor

X 25 2nd factor
4 790 =5 x 958
Partial products
1 916 =2 x 958
Then, add the partial products.
11
24

958 1st factor

X 25 2nd factor

Partial products 4 790 = 5 x 958

1 916 = 2 x 958
23 950

Therefore, the carnival earned Php 23, 950 this week.

To multiply whole numbers, start with the least to the largest place value
(right to left). Make sure that the digits are in the correct place value. Regroup
as needed.

For further understanding:

3 3
3 3

a. 761 761
X 56 You may omit the zeros but x 56
4 566 make sure to place the 4 566
+ 38 050 rightmost digit in the + 3 805
42 616 correct place. 42 616

Thus, the product is 42 616.

24 24
1 1

b. 648 648
x 52 x 52
1 296 1 296
+32 400 + 3 240
33 696 33 696
Thus, the product is 33 696.

Let’s Remember
 In multiplication, the numbers that are multiplied are called factors.
 The answer in multiplication is called product.
 To multiply numbers, multiply each digit of the first factor by each digit
of the second factor considering the place value of each digit. Regroup
when needed. Then, add the partial products.
