Discussions on Solving One-Step and Two-Steps Linear Equation in One Variable

In this lesson we will only study One-Step and Two-Steps Equations. One-Step Equation is
an equation that can be solved by a single property of equality, while the Two-Steps Equation can be
solved by two properties of equality.
Discussions on Solving One-Step Linear Equation in One Variable
ADDITION PROPERTY OF EQUALITY
CASE 1: Solving one-step linear equations in one variable.
Let us look at the equation y – 8 = 24.
Basically, this equation is a linear equation in one variable, the variable here is y. The equation
has two sides, the left side which is y – 8, and the right side is 24. The middle of the two sides is the
equality symbol (=).
First isolate/separate y in just one side of the equation:
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE 1: Solve and check the equation y – 8 = 24
Solution:
y – 8 = 24
Since y is subtracted by 8, then we
+8 +8
add 8 to both sides to undo the subtraction
y + 0 = 32
Simplify
y = 32
The solution set is {y = 32}
Checking:
y – 8 = 24 rewriting the equation
32– 8 = 24 substitute 32 in y, simplify
24 = 24 True

ILLUSTRAVE EXAMPLE
Example 1: One-step Word Problem of Linear equations in One Variable
Nancy bought 5 rolls of colored film and 6 rolls of black-and-white film. The 5 rolls of colored
film cost Php250, and Nancy paid a total of Php430 for both colored and black-and-white
films. Write the equation that represents the problem and solve for the cost of 6 rolls of black-
and-white film.

Hints:
Let x be the cost of 6 rolls black-and-white film
Nancy bought 5 rolls of colored film cost P250
Formula:
The total cost of 5 colored film and 6 black-and-white film is P430
Thus, the linear equation will be x + 250 = 430
SOLUTION:
x + 250 = 430 the equation
x + 250 = 430 Since x is added by 250, Subtract 250 both
-250 -250 sides of the of the equation.

x = 180 The solution set is {x = 180}

Php180 is the cost of 6 black and white film
CHECKING:
x + 250 = 430 rewriting the original equation
180 + 250 = 430 Substituting 180 in “x”, simplify
430 = 430 true

Given Two-steps Word Problem of linear equation in one variable

Jane joined the dining club at the local café for a fee of Php29.95. Being a member entitles her
to save Php2.50 every time she buys lunch. Jane calculates that she has saved a total of
Php12.55 so far after joining the club. Write and solve an equation to find how many times Jane
has eaten lunch at the café.
Hints: Let m be the number of meals, Jane saves 2.50 in every meal therefore the expression is
2.5m.
Savings on meals times the number of meals is 2.5m
The initial fee is Php29.95
The total savings is Php12.55
Formula: Savings on meals times the number of meals minus the initial fee equals the total savings.
SOLUTION:
2.5m – 29.95 = 12.55 The equation

CHECKING:
2.5m – 29.95 = 12.55 Rewriting the equation

True
