KARTAVYA -THE CIVIL SERVICES SOCIETY OF KIRORIMAL COLLEGE in pursuit of its

vision and mission to provide a platform for aspiring civil servants and to foster collaborative
learning, effectively organised a classroom session on the topic "Increasing Vulnerability to
Disaster and Disaster Management: Strategies and policies ".

The guest Mr.Vineet Thaploo, Educator at unacademy and Ex Rau's IAS Faculty received
warmly by the audience who expressed their delight by a round of applause.He was felicitated
by planter by Dr.Leena Devi.

Important points from session:-

● Hazard in himalayan states like earthquake and landslides is due to collision of Indian
and Eurasian plates.
● Hazard is a threat that has potential to damage the property and life,and Disaster is an
event that occurs suddenly and distrupts the normal course of life.
● Disaster Management act of 2005 was significant step of government towards controlling
of disaster .
● Construction of roads in mountainous region leads to deforestation that's why soil
became loose that leads to landslides.
● Glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) is sudden release of water from lake fed by glacier
melt.
● Intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) report of 2023 said that from
2000-2019,267 billion metric tons of ice had melt down that leads to rise in water level
that may submerged coastal area and islands.

Some measures should be taken to prevent disasters are:-

● Green Housing Scheme should be promoted.
● Doppler Radar should be used to escape from the phenomenon of cloud burst.
● We should use scientific method and geologist should be consulted while constructing
road and infrastructure in mountainous region.

At the end of the classroom session our speaker answered the queries of some students
regarding upsc preparation and he also suggested that students should focus mainly on what to
read? and what not to read?

It was really an enlightening session for civil services aspirants.The feedback received by
students was quite positive.Kartvaya has planned to organise such a informative session in near
future.
