DISCUSSION

A. WHAT IS AL-QURAN SOCIOLOGY

Understanding the Qur'an

According to language (etymology), the word al-Qur'an means reading or what is read.
According to a linguist, the pronunciation of the Qur'an is isim mashdar with the meaning isim
maf'ul, namely what is read. Because not only must the Qoran be read by humans, especially by
its adherents, but also because this book has always been in reality read by those who love him,
both during prayer and outside prayer. The naming of the last book of Allah as the Koran seems
very relevant with the fact that this book is read by many people. Al-Qur'an words with meaning
This is often found in the Qur'an, including the words of Allah SWT:

17 ‫ِاَّن َع َلۡي َنا َج ۡم َع ٗه َو ُقۡر ٰا َنۚٗه‬

18 ‌ۚ‫َفِاَذ ا َقَر ۡا ٰن ُه َفاَّتِبۡع ُقۡر ٰا َنٗه‬
Indeed, it is upon Us to collect them (in your bosom) and (make you clever) in reading them.
When We have finished reading it, then follow the reading (Q.S AL-QIYAMAH 17-18)

The meaning of the Qur'an according to terms (terminology) has many definitions (ta'rif)
varies. Scholars differ in formulating the definition of the Qur'an, due to differences in point of
view. The difference also lies in terms of length and in short the definition made. There are more
and more special qualities of the Qur'an. stated in the formulation of the definition, the longer the
definition of the Qur'an is. In contrast, few or even only one trait is mentioned in the definition,
then keep the definition short. Several definitions of the Qur'an have been put forward by
scholars, among others. God willing ‫ْو َرِةالَّناِس‬. God bless you َ‫ِللَّتَدُّبِر َو الَّتَذُّك ِر اْلَم نْ ق ْو ل م تَ َو اِتًرا َو ه َو َم اَ ْلق‬

The Quran is the word of Allah in Arabic, which was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad
saw to understand the contents and always remember, what was conveyed to us in the mutawatir
way, which has been written in the mushhaf, starting with surah alFatihah and ending with surah
an-Naas. In the definition above, the Qur'an is seen as having the following elements as follows:

1) The recitation of the Qur'an is in Arabic;

2) Revealed to the Prophet Muhammad Saw;

3) Delivered in mutawatir (continuously);

4) Has been written in mushhaf which begins with surah al-Fatihah and ends with surah an-Nas

In history, the jahiliyah Arab society was known to have personality and character who
are strict, uphold the teachings of their ancestors, and have strong tribal ties. The Qur'an calls
them the jahiliyah

beginning of its revelation,

This is the condition that the Prophet Muhammad Saw was given the task by Allah SWT as a
thinker and mover (man of action).

3. The teachings brought by the Koran made Arab society ignorant as its first object. It is at this
point of contact that ultimately there are many dialectical nuances were found between the texts
of the Koran and the culture of Arab society ignorance, both in the language used in the Qur'an
and the substance of its verses.

4. Dialectics itself provides a picture of how the reality of life is structured jahiliyah Arab society
and the Koran's response to it. This all at once also provides an overview of how the mission of
da'wah was carried out by Rasulullah Saw over a period of 23 years in Mecca and Medina. The
allusion between the Qur'an and the order of life of jahiliyah Arab societyAt that time things
don't always work harmoniously, and there tends to be rejection and contradiction.

Al-Qur'an in the Middle of Jahiliyah Arab Society

The process of revealing the Koran to the Prophet Muhammad and conveying it to

Arab society progressed gradually and sustainably. This makes al-

In other words, the Koran carries out improvements, reconstruction and even deconstruction

traditions prevailing in Jahiliyah Arab society. The main principle that is used

standards/barometers of the Qur'an in responding to the existence and validity of a

tradition or other is monotheism. When the traditions of Arab society

does not conflict with the principle of monotheism, the Qur'an allows it to remain valid

or provide improvements in his kaifiyah. However, if this tradition is not

in line with or even contrary to the principle of monotheism, the Qur'an changes it

or even prohibit its implementation.

CHAPTER III
A. CONCLUSION

The Koran is the holy book of Muslims which functions as a guide for humans in
directing their lives. Broadly speaking, the Qur'an contains teachings about aqidah, sharia
and morals, but the Qur'an also contains scientific cues, namely containing verses on science
and technology. To be able to recognize, understand and interpret the Qur'an, you don't only
need knowledge of Arabic, but you need various kinds of knowledge to reveal the meaning
contained in the Qur'an. This course examines science verses in the Koran. This material is
very important for students to broaden their views and knowledge about the Koran in order to
help them understand and interpret it.
