4421 A EN 20060104 Introduction

21
NX SERVICE AND CONFIGURATION TOOL

The Workspace
All main activities in the NX Service and Configuration Tool are performed in
the Workspace.
The Workspace is mainly introduced for the purpose of safety and to monitor
the consistency of the configuration settings of the NX database. The
Workspace creates a safe environment for the user in which he can make any
modifications to the configuration settings, test and verify them without
affecting the actual configuration settings of the NX system.
When starting up the NX Service and Configuration Tool, the user can choose
to load a temporary copy (snapshot) of the NX database in the Workspace via
File > Load active configuration:

Figure 3 : NX Service and Configuration Tool File menu with Load Active Configuration
selected.
He may then work on this temporary copy. Once all modifications have been
completed, he can store all the modifications in one transaction to the NX
database on the system (via Activate Configuration):

Figure 4 : NX Service and Configuration Tool File menu with Activate Configuration
selected.

22 Introduction 4421 A EN 20060104

NX SERVICE AND CONFIGURATION TOOL

This will prevent intermediate and/or unverified modifications of

configuration settings ending up in the NX database.

Caution: Adapting the configuration in the workspace is risky as there is no

auto save of made modifications. The user should finish adaptations in the
configuration in one session and then reload modifications to the database.

A bitmap can only be positioned to the left and/or the right of the text box.
These positions are always present. As long as the cell is empty: the width of
the text box is calculated without the logo.

Note: There will always be one pre-configured Sheet text box in the system.

You can:

Q Adjust the width of the text box and scale all cells to this new width. The width
is set to the total width of the text box, including the bitmaps, if they are not
empty (empty bitmap cells are not included).

Q Add the cell to the left or right of the selected cell by splitting the cell in two.

Q Delete a cell. If the cell is a bitmap cell (located at the left or right of the bit-
map), the bitmap is removed.
Each cell of the text box is scaled, the total width of the text box remains the
same.

Q Add/delete rows.

Q Specify the cell type.

This section describes how to configure the Image text box. An image text box
always has two cells and a configurable numbers of rows.
The image text box can only contain cells (bitmaps excluded) of the sheet text
box. Also the formatting of the cells is copied from the sheet text box. The
height of the rows will depend on the font size of the cells: each text must be
readable in the font as specified in the sheet text box.
An image text box is always scaled to the image cell. The font size is scaled as
well with the restriction that the text must remain readable (smallest font size
= 3mm). Text that does not fit the cell, will be limited to the part that can be
viewed.
As a user, you can specify which cells of the Sheet text box must be shown in
the Image text box. This will add the cells to the image text box, with same
font size.

Using p-values will achieve a consistent grayscale perception of the images,

independent of the viewing media, like diagnostic softcopy monitors, referral
workstation monitors, hardcopy film, and this in different light conditions.
The use of P-values will only provide optimal results when using a light box
with luminance within a range of 800 to 4000 cd/m2.
The implementation of P-values on the QS workstation is limited to 4000 as
described in DICOM part 14, although in mammography higher output light
boxes are used up to 6000 cd/m2.
For a light box with luminance between 4000-6000 cd/m2, set the
configuration to the maximum (4000 cd/m2).
For NX the default values when installing a new printer are set to: Light box
luminance: 2000 cd/m2, Ambient light; 10 cd/m2.

Note: It is important to note that the effect of consistent perception will only
be achieved if the image is viewed under the same circumstances as entered
during the system configuration, based on the measured values for lightbox
luminance and ambient light.

Note: P-values should not be used to tune the image quality to individual user
taste.

RIS mapping
Typically, the RIS settings are configured in two steps:

1 Configure the connection with a RIS device;

2 Configure the RIS mapping.

With RIS mapping, the incoming SPS attributes of the RIS are mapped to the
internal data structure of the NX. The system will provide a default (1:1)
mapping as standard, however in cases where the RIS sends outs the RIS data
in a non-DICOM way, the operator needs to customize the mapping. This
should result in the NX (inter) operating correctly with the RIS.
For configuring the RIS mapping, the following are required:

Q The list of (unmapped) SPS attributes sent by the RIS.

Q The list with the mappings of the SPS attributes to the attributes of the internal
data structure of the NX.
The RIS mapping can be configured both on-line and off-line:

Q In the on-line situation you can perform a RIS query to obtain the list of SPS
attributes sent out by the RIS.

Q In the off-line situation you can only obtain the list of SPS attributes by import-
ing a RIS data file. You can import/export the RIS mapping so that it can be eas-
ily cloned to another NX system.
If you select the RIS mapping tab, the system should retrieve the list of SPS
attributes sent out by the RIS.

Q Import an existing RIS mapping from file. In this case the imported RIS map-
ping will overwrite the current RIS mapping. You will be prompted to enter the
name and location of the file containing the RIS mapping.

Q You can let the NX Service and Configuration Tool create a default mapping for
the current set of SPS attributes; these will also overwrite the current RIS map-
ping. If needed, you can now manually customize the RIS mapping.

Concepts of the examination tree

This section provides an overview of the concepts and terminology used in the
examination tree.

Three levels make up the regular examination tree:

Age groups
Used to group all the Examination groups for a particular
age. Following age groups are used: 0-1.5 year, 1.6 - 5
year, 6-12 year, 13-16 year, 17 +. Age groups are
preconfigured and not configurable by the user. Hence,
every NX system will have the same Age groups. Pediatric
Age groups (Baby, Child, and Adolescent) will only be
visible when the system has the pediatric license enabled.
Otherwise, only the (default) Adult Age group will be
visible.

Examination groups
Groups all exposures of the same category. Example: Upper
extremities, Chest, Skull, Lower extremities, Abdomen,
Spine.
Note: each Exposure type can only be part of one
Examination group.
Every Age group must have the same Examination groups
(e.g. each Age group should have a Chest Examination
group, if one Age group has this Examination group).
Exposure type for test images will be stored in a special
test images Examination group. The user will not be
allowed to create, edit or copy this Examination group. Also
the Exposure types within this Examination group cannot
be created, edited, copied or moved.

Exposure types
The Exposure type contains several initial values for the
added exposure, which can later be changed. The Exposure
type is the central element in the Examination Tree.

Figure 86 : Levels of the Examination Tree.

4421 A EN 20060104 Configuring the examination tree

125
NX SERVICE AND CONFIGURATION TOOL

Apart from the structure in the GUI, Exposure types can also be grouped into
Exposure groups.

Q An Exposure group contains one or more Exposure types. It can be used to link a
set of Exposure types to protocol codes. For each Age group, the Exposure types
in the Exposure group can be linked to print profiles allowing automatic print-
ing of multiple Exposure types on a sheet in a preconfigured way.
An Exposure group can contain Exposure types of different Age groups. When
the Exposure group is added to an examination, only the Exposure types of
the correct Age group are added to the examination. The order of Exposure
types can be specified per Age group. The order will be used for adding the
exposures types to the thumbnails view.
An exposure group can also be added to the Add Image UI. This way, the
operator can manually add an Exposure Group to his patient.

Note: Exposure types can be added to multiple Exposure groups.

Note: If it doesn’t contain any Exposure Types for the Age group of that patient, the
Exposure Group will not be visible during normal NX operation.

WARNING: The user must be aware that assigning a wrong

examination group in case of an emergency patient may lead to
insufficient image quality.

Other concepts which are frequently used in the configuration of examination

trees are:

Q Processing parameters:
A set of processing parameters for an Exposure Type. Each Exposure Type has
its private set of processing parameters which consists of both Musica1 and
Musica2 settings. Dependent on the Musica2 license, the NX configuration
viewer will only show either the Musica1 or Musica2 processing parameters.
When Musica2 is enabled: the Musica2 package must be defined for each
exposure type: Examples: Pediatric, Thorax latitude, Genrad, …. Only
exposure types with a package assigned can be used in the Nx application.

126 Configuring the examination tree 4421 A EN 20060104

NX SERVICE AND CONFIGURATION TOOL

Note: Note: quality assurance images are always processed with Musica1. The
processing parameters for these exposure types are not editable.

Q X-ray Exposure settings:

A set of parameters, used to send to the APR or another modality device to
generate the exposure or (in the case of multiple exposures on 1 cassette) to
generate a partial exposure. For a partial exposure, up to 4 settings can be
attached to an Exposure type. E.g. for the “Spine cervical LAT + AP”
exposure, two exposures have to be made on 1 cassette.

exposure as well. This partial exposure has the same exposure settings as its
Stitched parent and it carries the same name.

Q The settings of a FLFS Stitched exposure are similar to the settings of a generic
