PAUL FALVEY’S 1932 FORD TUDOR

> 31
Story and photos by Craig Stare

IT was
w back in the late seventies when Paul was a
backkseat passenger in Colin Robinson’s heavily chopped,
4-speeed,1935 Ford Tudor on the way to a week-long
Westt Coast rod run. This was his first introduction
to th

one yyoung Paul Falvey. Those early days provided
cons
nstant sightings of a chopped 1938 Ford Coupe
on the streets of Timaru built by ‘Bluenose’, plus the
“madman” himself with his chopped 1933 Ford Tudor
dubbed ;The Butcher’. Paul just loved chopped cars.
After building a chopped Ford Popular, Paul purchased
a custom-built Model A400 street rod in 1998, adding
a few shiny bits and adjusting the ride. But in the
back of his mind, he still wanted a “real” hot rod. The
dictionary definition of hot rod should read: heavily
chopped, lots of horsepower, manual trans, fenderless
with unknown excitement to drive, and with possible
traction problems. The words dangerous and mysterious
were in Paul’s head. Being a well-adjusted family man and
caring father, he knew it had to carry the whole family,
and like a roller coaster, they had to enjoy the ride, yet
‘scream to get out alive’. The answer to his vision was
the ‘Orange Crate’ with headlights and a number plate!
Luckily, Paul came across a 1932 Ford Tudor body
for sale in Blenheim that was originally imported from
Argentina. It was in reasonable shape and had all the
parts required. The body was taken straight to the
body shop to be stripped, and then all panels were
reworked to perfection, along with a massive 3-3/4”

chassis rails for exhausts and Thrush mufflers.
A lot of custom handmade shiny bits were
needed. Intricate construction and tricky tig
welding were crafted with patience by Paul’s
son Brendan. The radiator cap is not a “Mr
Bones” unit but hand-crafted out of a block
of aluminium. The only decision to make was
the colour. The bare metal body was given to
Ben Martin at Customs Body Shop in Upper
Hutt to paint it. Three full undercoats went
on over epoxy before the Cromax water-
based Porsche Mahogany was sprayed with
Chromaclear over the top. It looks sensational.
When asked how long it took to build the car,
most people are stunned to hear it was 15 years,
but despite the time frame, the build has been
enjoyable and had to be done right to last the test
of time and ensure Brendan gets his inheritance.
Future work includes a full tuck and roll pleated
black interior and some internal pinstriping. Note
cool temporary Dave Bell cartoon door panels.
Paul was determined to enjoy the car this Summer
and debut it at the recent Nelson City Rod and
Custom Club’s 50th anniversary. It took out Top
Hot Rod and a Top 5 award. Paul was a member
of this club in the ‘80s and recently rejoined.

CARL AND RACHEL BAYARD’S
1932 FORD 3-WINDOW COUPE & ROADSTER
STORY AND PHOTOS BY TERRY HOSKING

1932 Ford 3-Window Coupe
EX-PAT Kiwis Carl and Rachel Bayard’s ‘Double Deuces’
are two of the finest full-fendered Deuces currently
participating and enjoying the Southeast Queensland
rodding scene. Before calling Australia home, Carl
and Rachel ran with Fifeshire Rodders in Nelson and
East Coast Rodders in Christchurch. Returning to hot
rodding once settled in Queensland, they are now
members of ASRF and recently purchased the ’32 3W
Coupe in a somewhat different guise than it is today.
A few upgrades and attending many hot rod
events filled the void for ten years until the
decision was made for a major makeover.
Busy with their Kiwi Flooring business, Carl and
Rachel were impressed with the style and stance
of cars coming out of one hot rod shop and called
upon Dion Willcox and the Kustom Shop team to
complete the Coupe upgrade. Dion’s vision soon
transformed the Coupe into the stunning 3W Deuce
you see today. The 3” chopped Deuce Customs
body and fenders received a complete tidy-up.

LEO VOOREND’S 1933 FORD TUDOR
