LEARNING STRATEGIES
DAY 1 Monday 90min
WARM UP Write and share. Have students write down then talk with their table mates about
their favorite childhood memory and/or favorite stuffed animal/toy.
10 min
INTRODUCTION/ Introduce the project using the prepared PowerPoint. Talk about the requirements
MOTIVATION/ and provide example work.
Prior Knowledge

20min
WHOLE CLASS Task the students to brainstorm two ideas for the sculpture using the ideas they
ACTIVITY wrote down earlier. If they dislike those two ideas, have them come up with more.

Make sketches of the final sculpture in their sketchbook/on paper (minimum One
per idea). Include a list of any and all materials they think they will need for each
60min sculpture.

(10min cleanup) Once you have 2 fully planned out ideas, write your name on the board. The
teacher will then call on students whose name is on the board to have a 1 on 1
conference with. After the conference, students will either be sent back to their
seats to continue brainstorming or are allowed to start experimenting with the
materials.

All students’ ideas should be approved by the end of class.

At the end of class if students have work they want to keep for next class, give
them time to store it in a specified safe location.

Bauleke & Young 2011

GUIDED & Students can work independently in their sketchbook and use their tablemates to
INDEPENDENT brainstorm ideas if they would like.
PRACTICE WITH
UDL In conference with the teacher, students will receive extra guidance if they need
more help coming up with an idea or materials. For students who may struggle
with speaking to the teacher, they may write their answers down.

HOMEWORK If the student plans on bringing materials from home, gather those and bring them
to the next class.

DAY 2 Wednesday 90min

WARM UP (5 min) Have students gather their materials and set up a workstation, making sure they
grab things they may have brought from home.
INTRODUCTION/ The teacher provides a demo for basic sculpture techniques such as notches, tabs,
MOTIVATION/ accordion folds, and ribbon curls. Students gather around a table and watch as the
Prior Knowledge teacher demonstrates.

15min The students who have significant experience with 3D sculpture may begin work
on their own project if they would like, keeping in mind that they stay somewhat
quiet while there is a demo going on.

WHOLE CLASS Students spend time making progress on their sculptures. Piles of material are
ACTIVITY provided for them around the room. Students can chat with friends and work at
their own pace if there is significant progress made by the end of class.
70min
