Unit 3 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG
Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal
Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal
long term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for
your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year
old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person
should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall
life/lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or
entrepreneurial vision you have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to
you. What it needs to be is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK
BEYOND GRADUATE DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A
DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD???? I RECOMMEND WE MEET TO DISCUSS IT TO
ENSURE ITS HUGENESS.

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?

My BHAG is to own a lot of real estate, 25 homes, 50 multi-family homes, and a few
apartment complexes. I want to also own one business.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

I was a kid when the recession of 2008 happened to my family. The cars, the toys, the
home, everything was taken. Surprisingly going through that experiment didn’t make me
afraid to own real estate, it made me want it more! During that time, one could look
around and see whose parents managed their money properly. I am not trying to be a
scum lord and own all this real estate and raise costs. I look on it as providing shelter
over people’s heads and keeping the rent the same if there are profits.

Secondly, I would like to own a business because that is what creates wealth. It is very
hard for individuals to create wealth and generational wealth punching someone else’s
timecard. My time is valuable so I should be able to create my worth.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

1
Last Update: May 2021
“I am a man of integrity, I have control of myself, I will live with the values of
accountability, honesty, and determination.”

It aligns well I believe because I am going to be an honest businessman which is starting

to fade away in this world.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

“My mission is to create generational wealth, hold core family values, and enjoy life.
Nothing else matters.”
It aligns because this is something I am after no matter how long it takes. I am willing to
sacrifice my happiness and time in this one life to create a better life for my child and
future children.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

1. Let me start off by saying I am very thankful to be a U.S. citizen and I am proud I
served this nation. However, the United States is my biggest obstacle. With the
current climate in politics, control, and wrong doings but the current and past few
leaders in all sectors of the government. We saw it firsthand, small business owners
had to close their doors after being open for years to never be opened again. The
money we pay into the system does not go to bettering our nation. We are starting to
fall behind in every area. Student debt is getting wiped clean, what does that teach the
generations before us, current, and the future? It is going to be tough if the United
States continues down the path we are on.

2. My second biggest obstacle is money. In order to make this goal happen, one needs to
acquire such properties. As we learned above, I do not come from money and if I did
it was swiped clean during the recession. I will most likely have to leverage certain
assets in the future or work multiple jobs to get enough income to make the goal a
reality.

3. My middle obstacle is time. I am currently 26 years old writing this. I own 2 houses
with a decent income to provide. However, if I want to grow like I want to I will need
time. You and I both know that time moves faster the older we get. Just yesterday, I
started my college journey in 2021. We are now going into 2024!

4. My second to the bottom obstacle is career growth. The issue at hand is, once you get
really good in a certain position, organizations tend to want to keep the individual in

2

that position. In fear of loss profits, fear of no growth, fear of a lot of things. But, if I
want to help my second biggest obstacle, I will need to be promoted.

5. My last biggest obstacle is determination. I say I have the drive, but when the dream
doesn’t start turning into reality, people tend to lose drive, lose hope, lose
determination. I need to keep my mental and physical health clear to stay on my path.
Good things come with time!

Section 2: Career Vision

Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?

When analyzing the type of career, I want to have it is tough because of the known and
unknown. For most of us we have worked in organizations with a clear understanding of
how things run. Promotions, pay increases, the ladder of leadership, and standardized
training. The fear of the unknown would come from having the flexibility, the lateral
structure for allowing minds to innovate into new ideas, building relationships with equal
individuals for psychological success. When concluding what career, I want to have I
would say both. To accomplish the things I want in life, I will have to work for an
organization and create something of my own to create more wealth. The organizational
career will fund the expenses and the protean career will create innovative ideas and
provide flexibility and build more relationships for internal well-being.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

I currently work as a middle level manager for a company in the landscape industry. If I
want to stay in this industry the next step will be becoming a sales manager or a branch
manager. From there continue to gain experience and become a regional manager and
continue up the ladder. Some alternative career paths would be a new industry but same
position and same process for rising through the ranks. I think when looking at what is
needed for continuous success and promotion it comes down to communication,

3

accountability, and management. One needs to be able to communicate to different
individuals for different situations. One needs to be able to be accountable for themselves
and the company they operate in. One needs to effectively manage the processes in place
and personnel, equipment, and the company’s money as if it was their own.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

I know when discussing flexibility in the work force it comes down to working from
home, little to no supervision, and having the ability to come and go as one pleases. I like
the idea of no supervision and the ability to come and go, but I do not like working from
home. I feel that option will soon be a thing of the pass. Artificial intelligence is
important to the industry and position you are working within.

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy
Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

1. One house a year.

2. By the age of 30 have 5 houses.
3. By the age of 35 have 25 houses.
4. By the age of 36 start a business.
5. By the age of 40 own 25 houses and 25 multi-family.
6. By the age of 43 own 25 houses and 30 multi-family.
7. By the age of 47 own 25 houses and 50 multi-family.
8. By the age of 50 own 25 houses and 50 multi-family and 1 apartment complex.
9. By the age of 52 retire from everyday job.
10. By the age of 53 accomplish my BHAG and create generational wealth and begin to
pass knowledge down to the upcoming generations inside my family line.

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

I am willing to sacrifice my top third value I hold true to myself; lifestyle. I understand
that is very important to myself, however, I do understand what it will take in order to
complete a BHAG. It will take sacrifices in a lot of areas but lifestyle being the main one
because that will determine the cash flow on creating more opportunities and generational
wealth.

The second area I am willing to sacrifice is co-workers. I admire my co-workers because

having good colleagues determines attitudes towards the company, employees, etc. I
value having good co-workers because it helps day to day life flow. However, I will work
with individuals I dislike for long-term personal gain.

The last area I am willing to sacrifice is creativity. Sometimes the most simple and boring
jobs pay the best. It is because no one wants to do them. This could be because image
issues with oneself or no desire or nothing new in the trenches. It is a robotic work

5

environment, and some people don’t like that. However, I am willing to do the boring for
the long-term gain if I have too.

Section 4: The one to two year plan
Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.
Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

Building a real estate empire.

a. Specific- Saving money, continuous knowledge, networking.

b. Measurable- Certain number of houses/units by age in life.

c. Attainable- People all over have done this within this timeframe.

d. Relevant- This matters because it is something I enjoy and will create

generational wealth.

e. Time- Current age of 26 to 50, for a total of 24 years.

Last Update: May 2021
2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

Moving up the corporate ladder.

a. S- Continuous knowledge, networking, identifying new opportunities.

b. M- Certain position by age in life.

c. A- Very attainable with my work experiences and educational experiences.

d. R- These matters to me because I will be able to provide for my family.

e. T- Current age of 26 until retirement age of 65, hoping to not work that log.
