Marxism sees society as a struggle between groups of people over valued
resources.ThemainfocusamongMarxistsistheclassconflictthatarisesfrom
theexistingeconomicbasethatgovernsagivensociety.Classconflictisatype
of social conflict between entire classes over the distribution of a society’s
wealth and power. The prominent figures in MarxismareKarlMarx,Friedrich
Engels,andAntonioGramsci.
Marxism argues that the economy or prevailing economic system dominates
theothersanddefinesthecharacteroftheentiresociety.Thismeansthatthe
prevailing economic system acts as the economic base to other institutions.
Therefore, the economic base shapes the ideas and values in institutions
known as superstructures. Inturn,thesesuperstructuresaresaidtosupport
theeconomicbaseandjustifyitsactions.
Capitalism,whichistheprevailingeconomicsystemtoday,isbelievedtohave
produced a society where capitalists exploit the majority of the masses or
proletariat.AccordingtoMarx,revolutionistheonlywayoutofthissituation.
