These instructions do not purport to cover all details or variations in equipment or to provide for every possible
contingency to be met in connection with installation, operation, or maintenance. Should further information be
desired, or should particular problems arise which are not covered sufficiently for the user’s purposes, the matter
should be referred to Wabtec. An applicable Federal, State, local regulations or company safety or operating rules
must take precedence over any instructions given in this material. Wabtec has no obligation to keep the material up to

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide guidance for diagnosing a 31-3 Battery Boost
Circuit fault to determine if fault is the result of RDIG6 failure.
Consult your local Wabtec ASM for any further clarification or support.

2. SYSTEMS AFFECTED
• 980E-5 Trucks
• 930E-5 Trucks
• 830E-5 Trucks

3. DOCUMENTS REQUIRED/RECOMMENDED
Truck Control Group Maintenance Manuals

PSB Danger, Warnings, and Cautions for Maintenance

Safety Danger, Cautions, and Warnings appear throughout the instructions and must be
read before performing any maintenance.

All applicable local facilities including any OEM test facility, Mine, Government, and
Industry rules for working with high voltage must be followed. Required personal
protective equipment, including but not limited to safety shoes, high voltage gloves, and
safety glasses must be worn.

Observe this safety information carefully to avoid personal injury or equipment damage.

NOTE: Read these precautions before proceeding to other sections of this publication.
Verify that all the Capacitor Charge Lights (CCLs) above the High Voltage inverter area
and the secondary link cabinet, if applicable, are not illuminated before accessing any
High Voltage area. Use measurement and protective equipment rated for 2000 VDC
minimum to verify that no voltage is present before touching any terminals. Verify the
DANGER functionality of the measurement equipment using site approved procedures both
before and after performing control group measurement. Failure to observe these
precautions may result to death or serious personal injury. (If any of the CCLs remain
illuminated or voltage is detected inside the group, consult the manual discharge of
capacitors section in the relevant vehicle test instructions.)
Troubleshooting Procedure:

1) General Practice:
• Understand and follow User Responsibilities.
• A good troubleshooting practice is to review all the events occurring in the
same timeframe and focus on the first event to report as a starting point for
troubleshooting multiple events.
• Confirm the appropriate software is installed. If the software requires a
modification, follow the appropriate Software Modification Instructions
2) When experiencing 31-03 Battery Boost Circuit fault.

3) The digital output controlling SCR3 supplies voltage from the backplane to control
the output. With truck parked, in rest, with 24V power on, use manual test
(GEK_91842A, Section 3.2) to pick up and drop out the SCR3 digital output while
measuring the voltage at SCR3CM12, verify that the output is commanded on and
off. (Should see 24V in Off State, On State is common so approx. 0V)

4) Verify that voltage is present at DSCEP-53

5) Check for voltage at DSCEP-64 and -77, If no voltage is found power system down,
remove DCS panel and remove back panel on DSC to access to backplane.

6) Measure resistance across leads of RDIG6 as shown below

7) If RDIG6 resistance is “Megaohms or Open Circuit”, replace backplane.
Note: RDIG6 tolerance is ± 5% of 2KΩ.

8) If the resistance readings are good, capture a truck download, gather necessary
documentation, and contact your Komatsu Mining Service Manager.
