Literacy References the way in which we use written, spoken, sign languages and our listening skills to

community effectively with the world at large(People, animals, ideas and things).
In literacy there are five(5)components namely: 1. Phonic awareness : which helps us to understand that
spoken words are made up of individual sounds called phoneme.
2.Phonics: Which refers to the paired association between sounds, spoken language and letters.
3. Vocabulary: Refers to range of words explained.
4. Fluency : The ability to read easily, quickly and correctly.
5. Reading: which is defined as the product of decoding sounds in words and letters and the
comprehension of language.
All of these components were established by the national reading panel as the five(5) key components at the
core of reading instruction.
On the 8th Sept 2010 director of the National center for educational resources development (N C E R D), Mr
Mohandatt Goolsarran sought the need to implement a robust and comprehensive problem in Guyana,
having hopes that in time to come Guyana will have a large population of literate people and so the ministry
of education (MOE) sought to introduce literacy hour in all schools, this hour will be given daily and focuses
solely on everything literacy related. The soul purpose of this is for if not all majority of our learners to gain a
high level of competency in their listening, speech, reading and writing skills and so the researcher deemed ''
