PROPOSAL FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDY RESEARCH


TITLE OF STUDY: Exploring ways to enhance/ build early childhood pre-reading and pre-writing
literacy skills at the year one level through letter recognition and sound association.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Early learners often exhibit a weak foundation in basic literacy skills.
This is due to their lack of knowledge in recognizing letter shapes, naming the letters, sounding the
letters and blending those sounds to form words. These are all essential foundational skills necessary
for pre-reading.

CURRICULUM AREA/AREAS TO BE USED DURING STUDY:

Language Experience

TOPICS/SUB-TOPICS TO BE USED DURING STUDY:

i. How to recognize/ identify letters of the alphabet by their names and shape (letter
recognition)
ii. Building letter-sound knowledge by determining what sounds are associated with a
specific letter(letter sound)
iii. Enhancing spelling skills through letter recognition and sound association (spelling)
iv. Building motor skills for writing development (writing)

OBJECTIVES OF STUDY:

1. To familiarize learners with letters of the alphabet through reciting, identifying and
producing each letter sound.
2. To correctly associate letters with their sound.
3. To develop early literacy skills while laying foundational pre-reading and writing skills.

INTENDED TARGET GROUP (Focus Group/Whole Class) & Number of Learners:

Focus Group (4year 1 Early childhood learners)

NUMBER OF LESSONS TO BE TAUGHT: 1

DURATION OF THE PRACTICAL ASPECT OF THE STUDY: 1 weeks

CONTENTS OF KIT:

i. Sound clip cards (cards, clips)


ii. Alphabet board (alphabet board, alphabet cards)
iii. Spelling board (letters, chips, pop it)
iv. Independent spelling cards (alphabet board, letters, picture spelling card)
v. Foam board (board, foam)
vi. Virtual Class Code (e-learning games)

A. 21st CENTURY/OTHER APPROACHES:

1. Interactive (learner centered) Teaching Approach- this is a 21st century


teaching approach that is both teacher child centered. The activities that support this approach
include- singing, sound clip-card activity, large group discussions, question and answer sessions
2. Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Approach- the activities for this
approach are designed based on the developmental needs of the learner. The activities that support
this approach include- singing, large group discussions, sound clip-card activity, question and answer
sessions, foam board activity

B. TEACHING METHODS (No More than 4, no less than 2):

1. Deductive Teaching Method- Activities that support teaching method: Spelling board
activity, foam board, virtual classroom
2. Discussion Teaching Method- Activities that support teaching method: large group
discussions, question and answer sessions
3. Gamification Teaching Method- Activities that support teaching method: virtual letter
writing, virtual letter identification, alphabet harvest game, letter load game

B. TEACHING STRATEGIES:

1. Panel/ Group Discussion- Activities related to teaching strategy: - large group discussions,
question and answer sessions
2. Memory- Activities related to teaching strategy: sound clip-card, spelling card, alphabet
harvest game, grab and full letter load game
