Infrastructure Design Project
Design Brief for the Final Submission
The final submission is for the whole project including the design conducted in assignments 1
and 2 and the material covered after assignment 2.
As a reminder form the design brief handed out in the first week of the semester, you are
required to design the following:
1. The steel structure of the warehouse only (portal frames and braced frames and the
typical steel connections), the roof sheeting and purlins.
2. The footings for the steel columns of the portal columns of the warehouse and the.
Assume that the allowable bearing pressure of the soil is 100 kPa.
• Load calculations including permanent, imposed actions (dead loads and live loads), wind
actions and load combinations. The wind loads should consider the longitudinal and cross
wind directions, internal and external pressures and local pressures coefficients (for purlin
design).
• Space Gass analysis of relevant load combinations (envelops of BMD, and SFD would be
useful).
-1-
• Design calculations for typical members (eg., rafter including haunches, column, purlins,
girts, end wall mullions, wall and roof bracing elements). Members and connections of the
canopy should also be included.
• Design calculations for typical connections (eg., knee, apex, base plate, splice, cross
braces and the struts etc.). OR if you decide to use connection tabulated standard design ,
you need to include the image from the design tables in your computation sheets.
• Design calculations for the pad footings for the columns. Allow 100kPa for soil bearing
capacity.
• Drawings to scale of plan, elevations and a cross section showing a typical portal frame.
• Drawings to scale of typical connections.
• Include table of contents at the beginning of the report with numbered calculation pages
and drawing numbers.
• Output form any computer analysis software (such as SpaceGass), preferably in the form
of bending moment and shear force diagrams.
