B. Answer the following questions:

1. What is a reaction paper?

According to University of Arkansas, a reaction paper is a document in which the writer

shares their opinion on a particular topic. In the classroom, reaction papers are commonly used
as tools to encourage students to analyze about texts and how those texts connect with each
other or with a bigger range of discourse. Reaction papers can also be used to generate
research paper ideas.

2. Write a reaction paper for each movie, a minimum of 250 words for each reaction paper.
Good titles for your reaction papers are required. Forty points (40) are allotted for each
reaction paper.
The Fear of Being Alone

The movie titled Pygmalion revolves around the fear of people coming and going from
their life, as well as a fear of being lonely. It explores the topic of what it means to be socially
acceptable, is it through our appearance? The way how we speak? Or is it because of the
behavior that our society bases their judgement on. It may look cliché however, the movie
delievered an unspoken truth.

Since the movie was produced on 1930s, we can notice that the only color present in
this movie were only black and white that helped me to notice the details of each scenes. I
found it boring at first because of the “pre-historic” filmatograpy and music at first but the
comedy aspect of this movie kept me entertained. From the beginning, this movie establishes
who the audience needs to pay close attention to and what to expect from these characters.
Professor Higgins showed a sense of cleverness while also revealing his rude side. And we have
Colonel Pickering, who is a gentleman that shows respect to one another. With this, we got a
duo that are polar opposites. Despite of all what happened to them they were still on beside of
each other.

After watching this movie, I felt sad since during this time of pandemic, many people
experience loneliness. No man is an island that’s we need someone to keep us accompany no
matter how different we are with each other. Human beings are connected with one another so
everyone must rely company and comfort of others in order for us to thrive.
Think Big, Take Risks

The movie Trading Places is a comical rendition of the realities behind corporate society.
This movie revolves around a single bet made between two rich brothers, Randolph Duke and
Mortimer Duke, who own a thriving brokerage firm. After witnessing an unfriendly encounter
between the head broker at their firm, Louis Winthorpe III, and a low-life beggar, BillyRay
Valentine, they decide to conduct an experiment. Utilizing their many resources, they flip the
lives of these men by putting Winthorpe in jail and in the hands of a prostitute, and giving all of
Winthorpe’s possessions to Valentine. The purpose of the experiment is to see if a man that has
grown up in an unsatisfactory environment can run a successful business. Can Louis Winthorpe
III (played by Dan Aykroyd), a successful commodities broker that has bathed in wealth all his
life, truly confine to the rags of his new life?

Business ethics issues were shown in the throughout the movie as the Duke Brothers
commited a federal crime. Which is kind of funny knowing their laws are. I enjoyed the movie
as the two male leads made good chemistry as two convincing billionaires. Although it tends to
rely heavily on slapstick kind of comedy on the later part, the movie still gaved us laugh.

“Think big, think positive, never show any sign of weakness. Always go for the throat.
Buy low, sell high. Fear? That’s the other guy’s problem.” This quote was running in my mind
after I’ve watched the movie. Taking risks isn’t a sign of weakness but instead it shows how
brave a person are. We may lose something while doing it, but the important thing is at least
we tried instead of not doing it at all. Many of our life’s greatest achievements requires going
outside of our comfort zone. Whether it means overcoming shyness to perform onstage,
investing money to help your business grow, or putting ourself out there for the chance to find
love. Many people are scared of failure however, it can actually provide an essential tool for
building character. Failure makes us stronger and more resilient. People who fail repeatedly
develop persistence in the face of difficulties.
3. Which movie shows socialization by nature? Explain your answer.

Trading Places shows socialization by nature because the characters Randolph Duke and
Mortimer Duke explored and discovered the social world around them.

4. Which movie shows socialization by nurture? Explain your answer.

Pygmalion shows socialization by nurture because Professor Higgins and Colonel

Pickering developed a relationship as they were exposed on the same environment together.

5. Why does socialization matters for each movie? Explain your answer.

Socialization is a process of learning one’s culture and how to live within it. Hence, it
prepares people in a social group by teaching them what are the social norms. For Pygmalion, it
helped the main characters bring joy to other people around them and for Trading Places the
Duke brothers learned the culture of the lower class so they know how to live within it.
