Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to Science 4- Self Learning Module 15 on Safety precautions in


planning activities during different weather conditions!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

3. apply knowledge on safety precautions in planning
activities during different weather conditions.

LESSON

Safety Precautions are action taken in advance to protect us


against possible danger, injury, or illness. These safety
precautions are to be considered in planning activities suited for
the weather conditions. (Plan of activities for the year)

Here are some Safety Precautions to follow during each kind


of weather:
Fine/ Sunny Days
1. Use light colored or thin clothes to feel comfortable;
2. Go on a picnic with our family;
3. Hang clothes to dry;
4. Use umbrella or hat when the sun is hot or bright; and
5. Eat fruits and drink plenty of water for refreshing.

Rainy Days
1. Play or study inside the house;
2. Use umbrella or raincoat and boats if you need to go out;
3. Wear dark colored and thick clothes;
4. Eat hot soups or noodles as good sources of heat and
energy; and
5. Don’t play under the rain or wade in the floods.

Stormy Days
1. Stay at home and store enough food and drinking water;
2. Use thick blankets during cold weather;
3. Use jacket or sweater to keep our body warm;
4. Prepare flashlights, candles, water or emergency kit; and
5. Listen to news or weather forecast of PAGASA if there is an
incoming typhoon.

Windy Days
1. Watch out for fallen trees or objects;
2. Do not go swimming at the sea;
3. Do not burn dried leaves;
4. Do not go for a walk under the trees; and
5. Do not go boating at the sea.

PAGASA classifies typhoons into signals for public safety.


Meaning of Storm Signals
Typhoon Signal Description
Signal No. 1  The wind speed is 60kph in a certain
place in at least 36hrs
 Classes in preschool in public and
private schools will be suspended
Signal No. 2  The wind speed is more than 60kph
but not more than 100kph in a
certain place in at least 24hrs
 Damages maybe light to moderate
 Class from preschool to high school
in public and private schools will be
suspended
Signal No. 3  The wind speed is more than 100kph
up to 185kph in a place in at least 12
to 18hrs
 Sea or air transportations is
cancelled
 People from low-lying areas must
evacuate
 Classes in all levels are suspended

Signal No. 4  The wind speed is more than


185kph, expected in a certain areas
in at least 12 hours
 Large trees are uprooted
 Electrical power disruption and
communication services are
disrupted
 Massive damages are expected

What To Do Before a Typhoon


1. Listen to weather forecasts;
2. Check and fix your house for any damage or unstable parts;
3. Store adequate supply of ready-to-eat food, clean water, and
clothing;
4. Prepare flashlights, batteries, candles, and kerosene lamps;
5. Have a first-aid kit with enough medical supplies;
6. Know the location of evacuation centers in your town; and
What To Do During a Typhoon
1. Stay calm and stay indoors;
2. If you see signs of water rising, better turn off the sources of
electricity. Electric-powered items should be stored in
higher areas and refrain from using them during flood;
3. Follow the advice of local authorities.
What To Do After A Typhoon
1. Monitor the movement of the typhoon;
2. Watch out for live wires;
3. Repair all damages in the house;
4. Boil your drinking water
5. Wear protective gears such as boots; and
6. Clean up and dispose things that may be breeding places of
mosquitoes.
