Self-Learning Module 17
Changes in the Position
of the Sun with the
Lenght of Shadows
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 4 Self-Learning Module 17 on Changes in the

Position of the Sun with the Length of Shadows!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Science 4 Self-Learning Module 17 on Changes in the

Position of the Sun with the Length of Shadows!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

L E S S ON

Let’s Find out!

How shadow changes in length and position?
Sun is the only natural source of light. It helps us see
everything around us. It also gives us heat. The sun is also caused
of shadow, when the light of the sun is blocked by an object if
formed a shadow.
Shadows come in many sizes. A small person makes a small
shadow. A big building makes a big shadow. The position of the
sun affects the size of a shadow. A person or object blocks more
light when the sun is low in the sky. More blocked light makes
shadow longer. Less light is blocked when the sun is high in the
sky. This makes shadows shorter.
Let’s take a look at these pictures.

In the morning, as the sun rises and sets in the afternoon, it

is low in the horizon, its light rays are slanted as they hit the
ground, so longer shadows are formed. (see fig.2 and 3)
Figure 2. Sun Rise Figure 3. Sun Set
When the sun is high or nearby above the horizon, the
sunlight strikes the ground at nearly a right angle so shorter
shadows are formed. When the sun is directly above the horizon,
the light rays of the sun strike directly above the objects, so no
visible shadow is seen on the ground since the shadow of the entire
body would fit in its footprints. The position of the sun decides the
length of shadow. (see fig.4)

Sun is the only natural source of light. It also gives us heat.

Do you know that aside from forming shadow, sun has an
important role to living things?
All living organisms on earth directly or indirectly rely on
each other for sustenance. Sunlight directly affects the survival
of plants and animals, as all life on earth depends on acquiring
the right amount of sunlight for energy and nourishment. Let’s
find out the effects of the sun to living things such as plants,
animals, and man.

The following are the effects of sun’s heat and light on living
things as shown on the pictures below.

surroundings?
Direction: Draw your answer inside the boxes. Number 1 is done
for you.

1. Sun above the 2. Sun at 5:00 in 3. Sun at 5:00 in

horizon the morning the afternoon

4. Sun at 10:00 AM 5. Sun at 3:00 PM

Activity 2: “Gives Us, Gives Us Not”
Direction: Draw a sun ( ) if the picture shows the beneficial
effects of the sun to living things, and moon ( ) if not.

Activity 3: “Life without the Sun!”

How is life without the sun? Sun is God’s creation where

living things depend on it.

Direction: Check if the following are beneficial effects of the

sun to living things and cross if not.
____1. Man and animals cannot see the beautiful surroundings
created by God.

clothes.
____3. We can move freely around without hesitation because
we see everything around us.
____4. Morning sunlight can give us Vit. D.
____5. Too much heat from the sun can cause skin burn and
itchiness.

WRAP UP

Now let’s summarize the lesson that you have learned.

Direction: (Modified True or False) Write True if the statement is
correct and False if not, then change the word that makes the
statement incorrect.
____1. Sun is the main source of heat and light that influences
all objects on earth.
____2. When sun’s light strikes an opaque object, it blocks the
light and form an object.
____3. As the sun changes its position on the surroundings, the
length and position of the shadow also changes.
____4. The energy coming from the sun has its good and bad
effects to non-living things.
____5. The heat and light from the sun help plants and animals
to grow.
