Dear Mom ,

I hope you're doing well. I was so excited to write to you about all the important information that
I was reading in many articles this past month. I was very surprised because many of them talked
about how important is our culture and identity where a lot of people struggle with recognizing
their own roots. According to Robert, the writer of the article said that when people from Centro
America immigrated to the United States specially in Atlanta, GA, where a big part of the
population is Latino, some professional people interviewed them to write an article. So, they ask
these people about their roots and culture. I never thought that they were unfamiliar in their
home country and must negotiate in their everyday lives in a new context. I was so frustrated
because the author said that “ immigrants from Central America are unlikely to see themselves as
Hispanic or Latino prior to living in the United States, more often identifying with their home
country, city, town, village, or neighborhood”. That makes me so sad because you know that not
all people are like this, but they have to know their own heritage at least in front of people that
want to know and be educated. However, Robert said that this was part of racialization theory.
Race theory is an interdisciplinary academic field devoted to analyzing how laws, social and
political, and media, shape and are shaped by social conceptions of race and ethnicity. Now, they
are saying that “Hispanic identity is through a complex process involving the interplay between
how they think of themselves and their thinking about how native-born Atlants view them”. I
know that these immigrants were migrating for similar reasons such as seeking better
opportunities, escaping violence, poverty, and being able to work or study, and I think that’s a
good way to progress in life, but they have to know each other, they have to represent their
countries, because is part to be a cultured person and have a open mind if someone ask you.
Unfortunately, racial meanings and identities are produced, maintained, contested and changed.
Mom, I hope that when you get here, don’t lose our beautiful culture that we have in Mexico. I
know that you’re not going to do it, but I just want to educate you to open your eyes and make
you think about what Central American people did, because it's sad.

Sincerely,

Yaneth Garcia.
