1. The length of a line measured with a 30-m tape is 310.550 m. When the tape is compared
to the standard it is found to be 0.010 to short under the same conditions of support, tension,
and temperature as existed during measurement of the line. Compute the length of the line.
2. The slope measurement of a line is 1240.4 m. Slope angles measured with a clinometer are
as follows. Determine the horizontal distance.
Cumulated distance, m 0 300.0 800.0 1000.0 1240.4
Slope angle, deg 0.5 1.25 2..5 4
3. The following slope distances and differences in elevations between tape ends were
recorded for a measurement.
Slope Distance Difference in Elevation, m
30.005 1.452
29.950 3.500
30.000 0.505
25.989 2.445
10.345 1.595

Calculate the horizontal distance between the two end points of this line.
4. A steel tape having a standardized length of 29.990 m with 8 kg tension, at 20 ℃, and
supported at the two ends, was used to measure a distance over smooth, level terrain using
standard support and tension and at an average recorded temperature of 30 ℃. The recorded
distance was 915.258 m. Determine the correct horizontal distance. The weight of the tape
is 0.60 kg, and 𝛼 = 0.0000116/℃.
5. A 100-ft tape weighting 2 lb is of standard length under a tension of 15 lb, supported for
the full length of the tape. A line on smooth level ground is measured with the tape fully
supported under a tension of 30 lb and found to be 4865.5 ft long. 𝐸 = 30,000,000 𝑙𝑏/𝑖𝑛2
and 𝑎 =3.53 𝑖𝑛3 of steel weights 1 lb. Make the correction for the increase in tension.
6. A 30-m steel tape weighting 0.7 kg has a cross-sectional area of 0.03 𝑐𝑚2 and a standard
length of 29.995 m when fully supported, at 20℃, and with 6 kg of tension.
(a) A line on a smooth level ground is measured with tape under a tension of 12 kg at a
temperature of 20 ℃ and is recorded as 1242.823 m long. Compute the correction for
the increase in tension. 𝐸 = 2,100,000 𝑘𝑔/𝑐𝑚2. Tension on the 12.823 increment was
4 kg, the correct amount for that span.
(b) This same tape is used to measure a distance recorded as 985.423 m over the level
terrain with the tape supported at the two ends and 6 kg of tension (temperature = 20℃).
Calculate the correction due to sag for this distance.
7. Compute the normal tension for the tape in (a) of problem 5 and 6.
