NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND

RECONCILIATION

the reconciliation process. Indigenous children over generations.

More than 139 residential schools operated

in Canada between the 1800s and 1996.
More than 150,000 Indigenous children,
First Nations, Inuit and Métis were forced
to attend these schools. Many of them
were subjected to physical and sexual
abuse, as well as harsh conditions. More
than 6,000 children are estimated to have
died in residential schools. Indigenous
people have long suspected that former
residential schools had unmarked
graveyards that hid their horrific human
cost. Hundreds of such graves were
reported in the summer of 2021 as First
Nations used ground-penetrating radar,
archival detective work and the help of
experts to find the remains of long-lost
loved ones. The burials touched off an
outpouring of support from Canadians.

Last year, Sept. 30 was made a federal

statutory holiday in order to remember
children who died while being forced to
attend church-run and government-
funded residential schools, those who
survived the system and made it home,
and the families and communities still
affected by lasting trauma. The Strathcona
Tweedsmuir School Community
commemorated Orange Shirt Day on
Thursday September 29th.

However, Reconciliation must occur

year-round, it is a process without a
definitive end point. Every day, we must
resolve to stand with survivors and their
families. The process requires our deep
understanding, and empathy as the
event will always remain apart of the
Canadian Identity.

As students, staff, and faculty members it

is our job to be a part of conversations
around reconciling our role in it. We must
engage in continuous learning and
research on our own, and question and
reconsider our narratives. Starting this
year, we also have a Blackfoot Elder on
Campus who will be a part of our learning
process.
