A COMMEMORATION OF SERVICE

Remembrance Day is an acknowledgement
of the courage and sacrifice of those have
served and lost their lives for the Nation.
Furthermore, it is a recognition of the
individual responsibilities Canadians have
to work to maintain the peace the veterans
sacrificed their lives for. Nationally,
Canadians recognize Remembrance Day on
November 11th, to mark the end of long-
standing hostilities faced during the First
World War and to commemorate the
sacrifice of those who have served in the
nation's defence.
The poppy is a recognized symbol of
Remembrance of those lost, and a
continuous hope for a peaceful, safe future.
The poppy's use as a symbol of
remembrance was inspired by John
McCrae's poetic work, In Flanders Fields,
and the symbolic nature of the poppy now
transcends borders.
“A Moment of Silence” is a respectful ritual
in which normal activity ceases and
individuals stand in silent remembrance of
those the Nation has lost through their
service in the Canadian Military. This
practice is held annually at 11 am on
November 11th, and the STS community also
observes this tradition as a community
during the Remembrance Day Assembly.
STS STAR
ISSUE: 2
The “Moment of Silence” has become a
critical aspect of National Remembrance
culture in Canada and many other western
European countries.
Annually, the STS Grade 7 community
participates in a touching, “No Stone Left
Alone” ceremony to honour the sacrifice and
service of Canada's military. The students
travel to the Field of Honour at the Okotoks
Cemetery to place poppies on the headstones
of individuals who have lost their lives in
service. The aim of the ceremony is to ensure
that no veteran’s headstone is left alone on
Remembrance Day. The ceremony is mainly
student-directed where students read “In
Flanders Fields” by John McCrae, recite the
Act of Remembrance, and the Commitment to
Remember.
The ceremony's critical outcome is the
reminder that the soldiers whom the nation
lost were also individuals underneath their
uniforms. Individuals with families, friends
and entire communities of whom they were
an integral part.

THE WAR IN UKRAINE

The war in Ukraine started on February
24, 2022, when Russia’s army mobilized
to the border and invaded. Russia
quickly seized the eastern territories of
Ukraine, which have a high ethnic
Russian population, and continued its
invasion westward. The military
estimated that the entire country would
be taken within a matter of weeks.
However, because of Ukrainian
resistance and weapons along with
intelligence support from NATO, the
resistance of Ukraine was able to hold
back the invasion, using javelin missiles
to destroy dozens of Russian tanks, and
various Surface to Air Missiles (SAMs)
to retaliate against the fleets of jets sent
in.
When Russian forces began to get pushed
back, and Russia was forced to retreat
regions of Ukraine, Vladimir Putin began
to threaten a nuclear attack on Ukraine,
something which has not occurred since
the end of World War Two at Hiroshima
and Nagasaki. In response to these threats
of mass murder by the Russian president,
NATO and President Biden (USA),
publically stated that if Russia used any
nuclear or chemical weapons, “It'll be
consequential, and depending on the
extent of what they do will determine
what response would occur.'' This evasive
answer leaves the question; will NATO
respond with force to Russia, and will they
respond with nuclear retaliation?

So far, the war has lasted eight months,

with Russian forces being pushed out of
Ukraine completely, with thousands of
soldiers captured, and Russia initiating
the draft. Over the summer, large-scale
fighting took place near the
Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and
began shootings around and launching
missiles towards, and near, the nuclear
power plant, risking a nuclear
meltdown.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Through individual student research, the

students are able to understand the
significance of Remembrance Day, and
students gain a deep awareness of the
selflessness and bravery of those who
served to defend our country.

Remembrance Day is one day of

commemorating the hardships of those
who have gone before us and of the
ongoing struggles faced by individuals
nationally and globally. However, what
might be the most important part of
Remembrance is its long-standing
nature. The most critical days of
Remembrance are the days in which one
enjoys the liberties and freedoms of
living in Canada; everyday. It takes a
simple moment of recognition of one's
privilege to understand the magnitude of
sacrifices that make up a seemingly
“insignificant” moment in one's life.
Remembrance is interpreted differently
across individuals, and while many
might not have personal connections to
those lost in these wars, one must
understand, their sacrifices have had
generational impacts.

REMEMBERING MEHMED V 178
YEARS LATER
THIS WEEK’S COMMEMORATION REMEMBERS MEHEMED V

Born on November 2nd, 1844, Mehmet V
(Reshad) is often underlooked in the
Ottoman Empire’s role in World War I,
fearlessly challenging the dominant
world powers. Serving as the oldest
Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Mehmet
V’s guidance to the empire helped
fragments of its culture last through its
eventual fall, two world wars, and the
division of the Middle East by foreign
powers. With a stroke of bad luck, his
empire was thrown into chaos, however
Mehmet miraculously kept the empire
intact even on his deathbed. The
unfortunate timing of his ascension to
the throne kept him from further
progressing his efforts, otherwise would
have been known as one of the strongest
monarchs.

ISSUE: 2
The Ottoman empire was in disarray.
From an unbelievable story of its
beginning to conquering over 20
million square kilometres, the
Ottomans were widely feared,
especially after their successful capture
of Constantinople (Istanbul after
capture). The empire had so far lasted
(years), facing Mongols, Crusaders, and
even their Safavid allies, and
establishing itself in European land,
Arab states, Mughal Subcontinent
(South Asia), and even Japan. However
now, the world faced an unprecedented
scenario: The First World War. Unlike
anything anyone in the earth’s history
had ever seen before, this was a multi-
nation war on a scale capable of
bringing down entire empires.
Mehmet V was born on November 2nd,
1844, and was kept in a specific part of
the palace for the first 30 years of his
life. With the sultan at the time of his
birth, Abdulhamed II, fearing
deposition from enemies in an effort to
use the young heir, demonstrated
countless times in history, he kept the
most apparent heir, Mehmet, confined.

Abdulhamid was struggling with keeping the
empire intact, although he quickly showed
enemies of the empire he was capable of
managing his land. In those first 30 years of
confinement, Mehmet studied poetry and
observed cultural practices. However, when
Abdulhamid unexpectedly fell ill and died,
young Turks began the “Young Turk
Revolution”, and thus changed the constitution
to fit their needs. Mehmet, now officially Sultan,
had no power by this new constitution. Later in
the 1913 Ottoman Coup D’état, the constitution
once again changed bringing three high-
ranking officials to lead the empire. Mehmet
saw how easily he could be deposed or killed, so
he lay low for the next few years until he saw his
chance.
Only one year after three high-ranking officials
were in charge of his empire, Mehmet used the
downfall in their policy with Germany as an
excuse to declare himself the true ruler of the
empire. He declared war, leading the three men
into hiding as Mehmet finally regained his
power as Sultan. Mehmet’s ambitious war
against the “Allies of World War 1” seemed
impossible; However, he quickly showed his
leadership by winning countless battles and
uniting his empire under his new-found
leadership.

ISSUE: 2
The war, surprisingly, seemed
favourable for the Ottomans. Mehmet
called for allies to rally against the
western powers and led the charge
himself.
Mehmet’s life came to an unexpected
death in 1918, in his palace at the age of
73, making him the oldest Ottoman
sultan. Days after Mehmet died, the
empire fell. In the following days of his
death the empire began collapsing,
losing battle after battle. Without
Mehmet, the empire fell within 6
months. His leadership brought
temporary relief to the struggling
empire, and he successfully upheld the
vast land while reigning. Born in hard
times for his people and land, he
demonstrated exceptional leadership
and a successful reign in times where
other sultans would have failed. His
reign, although short, demonstrated his
strength of ruling where only death
could behold him from upholding the
empire.
If it were not for the impossible
conditions he was faced with: a
controlling family, loss of power to his
own ministers, war against western
powers, and his old age, Mehmet would
have surely been crowned as one of the
best reigning monarchs in history.

STS MUSIC APPRECIATION CIRCLE

At our school, we have multiple clubs
dedicated to playing music. Examples
include the Pit Band, Jazz Band, Jazz
Combo, etc; however, two Grade 11
students, Kameron Sharma and Hanna
Klassen, noticed that there was no club for
simply just listening to and enjoying music!
That is why they created the STS Music
Appreciation Circle. This is a club for
people in senior school who are passionate
about listening to music, whether they do
it regularly or even if they just like a
specific artist. In the meetings, the group
would listen to any genre of music that
participants are interested in. Even though
the club will primarily be focused on
popular music that you would hear on the
radio, some classical pieces may be
included.
As a group, members would listen to new
releases of music. This includes new
albums, songs, live performances, and even
music videos! Then, members would
discuss any musical concepts that pertain
to the music they listened to, and have an
opportunity to present their personal
reactions to the music and defend their
opinions.

ISSUE: 2
Hence, the club would be very discussion-
based and requires a variety of participants to
run successfully. Each week, there would be a
google form that would be sent out to
members of the club, where members would
recommend what they want to listen to;
Hanna and Kameron would then pick a few of
the recommendations, based on how popular
the proposal is.
There would also be opportunities for
members of the STS community to perform
for the club, and then gain feedback from the
members about their performance. There is a
widely shared passion for music amongst our
peers. If you are even remotely interested in
this club, please fill out the form that
Kameron and Hanna sent out a week ago to
gauge the level of interest in the club, and tell
your friends about it!

Did you know that listening to music can
help you focus and improve your
memory? As per a study conducted by
Columbia University, music can improve
a person’s mood, as listening to music
activates the limbic system, which is the
part of the brain that controls emotions.
Yet another reason to join the STS
Music Appreciation Circle!

Please note that meetings are held in the

band room, during Monday Lunch (you
can eat, as long as you clean up after
yourself.) Attendance is not strict,
meaning that if you like a specific song or
artist, you could come for those sessions
only; however, you would still need to fill
out the google form so Hanna and
Kameron can email you the plans for
each meeting.

HOODIE PETITION

A recent petition has gained interest in the lives of

students. The “Hoodie Petition” calls for reform in
the school policy around uniforms, specifically, the
further inclusion of hoodies. The petition has
already gained over 50 signatures and members
have created and hung posters around the school
campus.

The petition aims to include more hoodies, with

more variation than the usual STS gym hoodies, as
currently exist the blue hoodies with and without
the dangling hood string. “Unfortunately, the
variety in the uniform regarding hoodies, as well as
a few more pieces of the uniform lack” said a
petition member, “our aim is to change that.”

The petition itself doesn’t expect to see

their specific style of hoodies added to the
uniform, but to push the idea for more
variety regarding hoodies, one of the most
popular choices of clothes in and out of
school for students and teachers. Although
members of the petition stay largely
anonymous, the petition forecasts their
peak is coming soon, as the idea spreads
rapidly among students.

“We hope we can inspire change soon” says

another member, “we will never give you
up, and we will be sure to never let you
down”. The movement’s motto was
recently chanted in a hallway: We’re Never
Going To Run Around and Desert You.

Watching such a supportive team
brought a smile to my face. So, with a

The start of the second set was filled
with excitement for what was to
come! I couldn’t wait to see what else
they could pull off. The lineup started
with players 4, 3, 8, 14, 12, and 9. They
started off a little rocky, but I had
faith because of their amazing first
set. The SV girls were able to tie up
the game to 4-4. From then on, there
was more of a back-and-forth
between both teams. Siena got the up
point with 6-5, and it began going
uphill from there! This one-point
lead continued as the points got up to
11-10.
What could the next game bring? I
definitely encourage the community
to watch and support the girls in
their next game.
Their communication and teamwork
were outstanding; however, it was
each member’s positivity which really
stood out to me. It not only affected
each other on the court but me as
well on the stand. Having such
positivity in the toughest of battles
can teach us that having such an
outlook on our own daily lives is
important, both in and out of court.

Suddenly it was a tie of 12-12 and I

was sitting on the edge of my seat.
What could happen? Will they be able
to win the set and consequently the
game? Well, with excellent ball
placement, the STS girls were able to
pull through and keep up with the
game. They began to go uphill again
and got a three-point lead of 20 -17
and again with 21-18. Finally, in the
end, the STS girls won set two with a
score of 25 -19!

STS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
GAINS BRONZE

On October 14th, the STS Cross Country
Team went to the Enoch Cree Nation
Reserve, situated in Treaty no. 6 Territory
in central Alberta, Canada. The Spartans
placed bronze! Here is what Mr. Race,
assistant coach of the team, had to say
about STS’ amazing performance in the
Cross-Country Race.
Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself?
A: “My name is Mr. Race. I am a design
teacher here at STS, and I’m also an
assistant coach for the Senior School
Cross Country Team. The head coach is
Ms. Chow, and the other assistant
coaches are Mr. Weible and Mr. Deis.
Q: What event were you doing?
A: “At the cross-country meet, the events
were a series of races sorted by age
groups. The running commenced with
the grade 10 female runners in a 4 km
race; we are talking about approximately
140 people running 4 km in a race. Then
went the grade 10 boys’ runners, and
after the grade 11 girls, grade 11 boys, etc.
Each runner competed with more
runners in their age group. The grade 10’s
ran 4 km, the grade 11’s ran 5 km, and the
grade 12 female runners ran 5 km while
the grade 12 males ran 6 km. That's the
day.

All the races occurred while hundreds of
people cheered the athletes on, not to
mention the members of the [Indigenous]
community were there and they had a
giant drum at the finish line. Just at the
finish line there was a circle of
drummers, about 8-10 drummers just
pounding this gigantic drum, about 6 ft in
diameter. So they are all sitting around it
making almost like a war chant, and
inspiring these runners who are coming
in near the end of the race. It was
breathtaking, seeing the appearance of
this drumming circle and the loud war
cries at these athletes who were just
exhausted. It was a sight to behold.”
Q. How did it feel to compete at Enoch?
A: “The provincial championships is the
culminating event of the cross-country
season in Alberta. Only the most elite
runners in the entire province are invited
to participate. It's a major event: it’s a
gathering of all the best runners, all the
coaches in the province, for not only a
celebration of the season but also the elite
competition. I felt lucky, because we
actually had 9 of our runners qualify
(check picture to see all qualifiers), so we
were able to bring all 9 athletes up to the
provincial championship, and I was really
proud to have had that many runners
make it that far.

I admire our athletes so much because
cross country is different from all sports
in many ways. If you're going to have your
very best race, you have to really push

athletes, because if you’re going to
succeed and become an elite runner, you
must have toughness, and grit, you have
to be willing to work hard and willing to
give it your all even if that means getting
out of your comfort zone.

Hello and welcome back to Tweedsmuir’s On this day, Grade 7s will be spending their

FUN & FICTION
A Sense of Self

Chapter 1
“Order for table ten,” I called towards
the kitchen.
“Got it!” I heard Yami call from behind
me, most likely finishing up in the
kitchen.
Scott, I reminded myself. When we are
working in the Cherry Blossom Cafe, stay
professional. The smell of smoked pork
tickled my nose. Sounds of sizzling
pops and crackles filled the space as
Ya-Scott expertly flipped the produce.
Scott always enjoyed himself when he
worked on his sandwiches. Always
coming up with new ideas, and sharing
them with the rest of the family. Mom
too, now that I think about it, with less
bragging, of course, and a smile
gracing her lips as she prepares the
homemade soups with delicate care.
Every day they bring their radiant,
vibrant energy to the customers simply
by doing the thing they love. Unlike me.
I’m the odd one out I suppose, sticking
out like a sore thumb. Everyone has a
purpose here in our little family cafe.

ISSUE: 1
Isabelle Malloy, the loving mother of two
teenagers, who cooks food of comfort and
warmth for the customers who “just had
that kind of day.” Scott Malloy, the serious
yet endearing 18-year-old son, who will
one day own this place. The one dad
created and built before he died, intrusive
thoughts whispered in my ear. Then
finally there’s me, Mia Malloy, the quiet,
closed-off 16-year-old daughter.
I still haven't figured out what I want to do
in life. Most kids my age at school have
that stuff figured out. Even when they’re
unsure, they have a trusted person to turn
to for guidance. A special someone to
assist in finding hobbies and interests that
could point them in the right direction.
Suddenly, my eyes caught something. The
single photo of my father, Manuel, Dad.

the shop, sitting on the front counter right
in front of the expansive chalkboard
menu. To Mom and Yami, it encouraged
them to keep living their lives. For me, it
almost had a sort of presence, like when
someone feels as if they are being

the customers?” Yami says with a
sincere smile.

I only give him a curt nod as I turn

Newspaper Announcement: Acknowledgement of Staff:

Hello everybody! The newspaper club is
honoured to present you the second edition
of this year! Thank you so much for picking
up this edition to read, and we hope you
enjoyed it!
As a part of our new expansion project, we
are hoping to keep the newspaper as a hub
for an explosion of creativity, news,
advertising, and so much more. We would
love to host your participation! Meetings are
bi-weekly on Mondays during Middle/Senior
School lunch in the library break-out room.
If you would like to submit anything to the
newspaper, or otherwise join as a writer,
editor, graphic designer, advertiser, or
photographer, please join the ManagBac STS
School Newspaper Group (STS STAR).
