Diminutives
Diminutives are nouns which indicate that the size has been decreased, therefore the noun is in
a SMALLER FORM.
In Afrikaans we use the following suffixes to form diminutives:
-ie, -tjie, -jie, -kie, -pie, ‘tjie and -etjie

babaTJIE
plantJIE
boomPIE
Rules:
Noun ends in a s, k, p, g and f after a short Noun ends in d or t = add -jie
vowel = add -ie

01 eg. huis = huisie


koek = koekie
dwerg = dwergie
brief = briefie
03 eg. skilpad = skilpadjie
mat = matjie
potlood = potloodjie
groep = groepie

Noun ends in a s, k, p, g and f after a double Noun with a long accentuated vowel or
vowel = one vowel falls away + add -ie diphthong that ends in l, n and r = add -tjie

02 eg. kaas = kasie


kraak = krakie
oog = ogie
graaf = grafie
04 eg. lepel = lepeltjie
seun = seuntjie
kraan = kraantjie

streep = strepie muur = muurtjie


Rules:
Noun with a short vowel that ends in l, n, r and Noun ends in -ng with:
m = double the consonant + add -etjie a) more than one syllable = the g falls away +

05 eg. pil = pilletjie


pan = pannetjie
07 -kie
b) one syllable = only add -etjie
eg. koning = koninkie ketting = kettinkie
blom = blommetjie ring = ringetjie wang = wangetjie

Noun ends in i, o, u or an accentuated a = add Noun ends in m, lm, rm = add -pie


an apostrophe + -tjie ( ‘tjie )

06 eg. taxi = taxi’tjie


foto = foto’tjie
08 eg. boom = boompie
palm = palmpie
arm = armpie
pa = pa’tjie
