Laboratory Exercise 5
BIOMASS ANALYSIS
Objectives:

At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to:

 Define biomass.
 Know how biomass creates energy.

Materials:

 1 clear plastic bottle


 1 teaspoon sugar
 Some warm water
 2 teaspoons yeast (dry yeast)
 1 balloon
 1 plate to catch the mess

Procedures:

1. Fill the bottle with about one (1) inch of warm water

2. Add two (2) teaspoons of yeast and gently swirl the bottle about a few seconds

3. Add one (1) teaspoon of sugar and swirl it around some more

4. Blow up the balloon a few times to stretch it out then place the neck of the balloon
over the top of the bottle

5. Let the bottle sit in a warm place for about 20 minutes.

6. Observe what happens.
