SAP EWM transformation

Migration from LE-WM (on ECC or on SAP S/4HANA) to

SAP S/4HANA EWM is considered as project work
§ SAP provides tools to accelerate the project
§ Change management is required as WM and SAP EWM have different
concepts to handle warehouse processes.
§ WM projects usually run with many add-on developments. Transition
requires thorough investigation and alignment.

SAP does not provide tools to migrate a decentral SAP EWM to an

embedded EWM in SAP S/4HANA
§ There are good long-term reasons to run warehouses on a decentral
platform.
§ The first objective of EWM in SAP S/4HANA is to give customers with a
small / medium warehouse a solution with reduced TCO as no separate
instance is required.

Basic shipping and Transportation Management within SAP S/4HANA

§ Defined collection of business processes relevant for shipping within

SAP S/4HANA Enterprise Management.
SAP S/4HANA
§ The processes can be implemented with SAP S/4HANA release 1511 with SUPPLY CHAIN
LE-TRA and used until end of life of the compatibility scope (solution Suite
capability: basic shipping).
§ The main functions of LE-TRA will eventually be replaced with the
Transportation Management functions within SAP S/4HANA Enterprise
Management. Due to the development of the freight processes in Products
Transportation Management, the functions might have been realized
differently than they were in LE-TRA. Digital Core Transportation Management
It is planned that the processes can be implemented with selected
functions of SAP S/4HANA TM* à (solution capability: Transportation

Transformation approach: how-to, available tools, and more
Key takeaways

Moving from an existing LE-WM solution to SAP EWM can be

done as “brownfield” or “greenfield”.

It is possible to have different types of SAP warehouse solution

in the final SAP S/4HANA system

There is no support from SAP tools to move SAP EWM

warehouses at a later point in time from embedded deployment
to decentral deployment or the other way round

SAP TM can be used with basic shipping or advanced shipping

in SAP S/4HANA

Shipping functions in SAP TM might have been realized

differently than they were in LE-TRA.

For SAP EWM there are some migration tools to take over
warehouse data from LE-WM; for SAP TM there are no such
tools in place

Selected functional differences of SAP TM and LE-TRA – Scheduling

▪ LE-TRA route is NOT part of the compatibility scope and can be used after 2030
▪ LE-TRA route information is used by various other SAP business applications, for example, for scheduling
▪ Functional replacement of LE-TRA Route with SAP TM is on the product roadmap

LE-TRA SAP Transportation Management

▪ System determines the route for each order item ▪ The freight unit contains the start location derived
▪ Route can be re-determined in the outbound from the shipping point and the destination location

Comparison of functionalities in LE-TRA and TM
Key takeaways

Major technical differences between SAP TM and LE-TRA

▪ SAP TM does not support IDoc Interfaces in SAP standard
− For the ASN process, new Webservice interfaces have been
introduced
− For collaboration with external systems, additional Webservice
interfaces are available
▪ SAP TM does not use output control as output management
system, but Post Processing Framework (PPF)
▪ SAP TM does not directly use the LE-TRA route. LE-TRA route can
be used after 2030

Comparison embedded vs. standalone deployment option

SAP S/4HANA’s code line, simplified data model, and modern user experience are consistent for both
decentral and embedded. Decentral EWM in SAP S/4HANA provides additional deployment flexibility in the
IT landscape.
