2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

2.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The UMS system is composed of airborne equipment (BRITE SAVER 2), which records data coming
from the helicopter main instruments panel or ARINC Bus (if the helicopter is equipped), from analog
probes and from existing or specifically added sensors. Those data allow to determine and to verify how
the helicopter is used (take-off time, landing time, flight time, cycles, operational anomalies…)
The data from On/Off contacts and the analysis of the flight parameters indicate the helicopter operating
phases (power on, engine off, engine start, in-flight). Those data are stored every second, to be able to
rebuild flight sequences.

Two memories (one internal flash memory and one extractible SD memory card) are used in the
recorder to store information. All data and observed faults are recorded simultaneously in both
memories.

The other part of the UMS system is the ground station, in which the SD card allows to import data and
store them in a database. Then the ground station can process these data for analysis and validation.

There are several types of information exchange:

Acquisition:
1. Analog acquisition (parameters, battery voltage …).
2. Logic acquisitions (Air/Ground switch, chips detectors).
3. ARINC digital acquisitions.
Output communications:
4. Extractible memory: SD card.
Human Machine Interface:
5. Logic (On/Off) inputs and outputs (lights and pushbuttons).

2.2 BRITE SAVER 2 HUMAN MACHINE INTERFACE

The BRITE SAVER is designed in order to cause no perturbation and no additional workload for the crew
in flight.
In case of Warning or Exceedance, on ground, the pilot will make an entry into the aircraft maintenance
log for maintenance action.
The lights on the front panel show:
 The BRITE SAVER 2 operating status : SYStem light
 The SD card status : MEMory light
 Exceedance parameter : EXCeedance light
There is a button "TOP" for Top events marker in order to insert a mark on the recorded data. This
function can be used when an event occurs, to store a parameters reading, to prepare the update of the
BRITE SAVER 2 internal clock or to calibrate BRITE SAVER 2 with instruments. On the way back of the
flight, during the data processing (computing) on the ground station it will be easier to locate the events
marker actuation time. The external memory SD card is inserted in a slot covered by a trapdoor.

2.3 GROUND STATION ERROR MESSAGES

Refer to Ground Station Software User's manual MUL-0020-84E-EN.
The ground station processes the recorded data and any system faults recorded during operation.
Details of error messages help to identify the origin of the problem.

3 AIRWORTHINESS LIMITATIONS INFORMATION

The data collected are for non-credit; it means that the data must not be used in order to revise and/or
extend maintenance practices or flight operations.

No airworthiness limitations associated with this supplemental type design change.

The BRITE SAVER has been designed and tested to ensure that there is:
 Information displayed only on ground.
 Neither perturbation nor additional work load for the crew.

4 INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS

4.1 DESCRIPTION
This chapter contains the inspection requirements for the BS2 system installed in AS350B3 and
EC130B4 helicopters in accordance with STC 10017248 (AS350B3/EC130B4).
The inspections must be accomplished by appropriately trained personnel to assess the airworthiness of
the helicopter, and any discrepancy must be eliminated prior to further flight. The following inspections
may be performed in conjunction with the Airframe Inspection Program for the aircraft.
The BRITE SAVER (REC-ARA0-TT-00) requires a periodic overhaul every 10 years. This overhaul
must take place at the NSE factory or at an NSE approved repair center.

4.2 INSPECTION PROGRAM

No particular inspection program.

4.2.1 Inspection Program Interval

It is advised to perform at least every two years an engine run-up and in flight test, in order to be sure
that the parameters recorded by the Brite Saver are always recorded properly. For these checks use the
test sheets supplied in appendices D/E.

This chapter contains the locations of interior and exterior panels that must be removed in order to gain
access to the components of the BS2 KIT.

9 TROUBLESHOOTING

The following parts define the probable cause and the applicable procedure for correcting the main faults
that can appear.

9.1 FAULT INDICATION AND LIGHTS ON BRITE SAVER 2

The SYStem, EXCeedance and MEMory lights are visible only on ground.
When turned on, the BRITE SAVER is inactive during about 20 seconds (self-test). Please wait for this
duration before making any analysis.

9.1.1 Factory Mode

BRITE SAVER 2 is in this mode when you receive it. It is important to configure it with ground station
and SD card to record data (Refer to Ground Station Software User's manual).

9.2 HOW TO UPDATE THE EXTERNAL MEMORY SD CARD

The SD card update can be performed only when helicopter is on the ground and engine off.
To start the SD Card Update Mode:
- check that the helicopter battery is switched "OFF",
- insert the SD card in the slot,
- push and hold the "TOP" push button and switch "ON" the helicopter battery,
- Maintain "TOP" push button pressed until the "MEM" light becomes steady red.
The content of the internal memory will be copied on the SD card as described below.
- Stage 1 : Start of SD Card Update mode

9.3 DEFAULT MESSAGES ON THE GROUND STATION

On Ground Station, some defaults could appear during recording data on Defaults Tab

List of defaults message on Ground Station:

- Air/Ground Switch fault
- Flight without SD card fault : SD card is not present or is not up to date
- Memory almost full
- Memory full
- Start ARINC missing

9.4 CHECKINGS
9.4.1 BRITE SAVER lights

Testing the BRITE SAVER lights ensures that they are properly working.
- Press the Top Events Marker button during 5 seconds (helicopter on ground only).
- Release of the button then a test sequence of the lights starts.
Test sequence:
- "EXC", "MEM", "SYS", “VIB”, “L” and “R” lights simultaneously turn on "Green" during 1 second,
- "EXC", "MEM", "SYS", “VIB”, “L” and “R” lights simultaneously turn on "Amber" during 1 second,
- "EXC", "MEM", "SYS", “VIB”, “L” and “R” lights simultaneously turn on "Red" during 1 second.

9.4.2 BRITE SAVER Power supply

Check :
1. Check the power supply fuse (F1),
2. Check wire connections and continuity. There must be 28 volt between pin 9 and pin 22
(connector X1).

9.4.3 ARINC link

Check :
1. Check if measurements are displayed on the Multi Function Display.
2. Check wire connections and continuity.

9.4.4 Ultrasonic Air/Ground switch

1. Check that the lights on the BRITE SAVER 2 are ON.

2. Put the hand in front of the ultrasonic air/ground switch.
3. Check that the lights of BRITES SAVER2 are OFF.

9.4.5 Chips detectors link

1. Switch "ON" the helicopter battery.

2. Remove the chips detector from its housing.
3. Shunt the contacts of the detector.
4. Check the continuity between the corresponding pins on the connector.
