PRACTICAL TASKS

ACTIVITY Prepare a construction schedule bar chart.


Prepare a Gantt chart for a residential building project. Your chart needs to be realistic.
You could talk to your employer or the trainer to find out more about how to calculate
timings.

You can upload a Gantt Chart you have previously prepared, or prepare one for the
attached project

The student is required to upload a file.

Guidance notes

Create own programme using A3 handout paper. Use the Builders Rd Plans.

Look at the example house handouts to assist.

Excel file for Gant could be used or do it manually on the A3 handout.

Using examples create a Gant chart as required by the question.

Limit the number of tasks to no more than 50.

As a guide think about the following headings. Include and average of 5 tasks under
each heading.

 Site establishment
 Work up to the top of ground floor
 Walls, roof framing and roof cladding including windows and door frames
 Internal wall and ceiling finishes
 Cabinets, doors, kitchen and wet area fitout. 2nd fix carpentry
 Painting and other fit off items.
 External works
 Defect repair and handover

To complete this task you need to:

Note: the following applies only to shops one, two and three on the ground floor level.

Use the templates in the Learning Platform but only complete tasks for internal doors and
Internal painting.

Rememeber that the intent is for you to demonstrate your understanding

Guidance Notes

Complete the schedules for the following trades.

1 Internal doors
2 Internal Painting.

1. Produce a materials schedule for the project in the attached plans. The schedule should
show:
i. What plant, equipment and materials are needed
ii. Estimated costs. You will need to measure approximate quantities to calculate these
costs.

2. Produce a labour schedule for the project. The labour schedule should show:
i. The makeup of your off-site operations support team
ii. The makeup of your on-site operations team including sub-contractors
iii. An indication of when the labour will be needed and how many will be needed

You can upload a copy of a schedule you may have done previously

ACTIVITY: Complete a Tender Review Form

o complete this task you need to demonstrate that you can engage with a sub-contractor
by reviewing their tender.

(If you are completing this course in class, your trainer may arrange a role play for the
class.)

Complete the attached Tender Review Form. This can be for a project you are working on,
or for a project supplied by your trainer.

The tender review must show how you have demonstrated equal opportunity principles for
all contractors

The student is required to upload a file.

Guidance Notes

It is necessary that students attend class for this activity. Simulated examples will be
used in class to complete Abstract of bids template. The scenario will be to examine the
tenders for concrete works. Tenders have been received from 3 subcontractors. All have
received the same documents and have submitted quotes with the following information.

The tender request asked that the following works be included.

1 Set out based in grid lines supplied by the builder


2 All excavation works
3 Liaise with the white ant company. The builder has awarded the contract to Tim’s
Termite Company
4 Compaction testing of the subbase which has been prepared by others. Supply
certificates for minimum of three tests
5 Formwork to slab edges and set downs in wet areas
6 Fix only of reinforcement.
7 Fix only of Vapor membrane.
8 Supply and place concrete
9 Curing for 7 days to the slab by ponding
10 Removal from site or surplus soil from excavations
11 Dewatering if required.
