LET'S GET NOUN-

UNDERSTANDING'!
UNVEILING THE
DIFFERENT TYPES OF
NOUNS IN ENGLISH
COMMON NOUNS
These are everyday nouns that
refer to general people, places,
things, or ideas. They don't
need to be capitalized unless
they start a sentence. For
example, cat, city, book.
PROPER NOUNS
Proper nouns are specific
names of people, places, or
things. They always start with
a capital letter. For instance,
Alice, Paris, Coca-Cola.
ABSTRACT NOUNS
Abstract nouns represent ideas
or concepts that cannot be seen
or touched. They are things like
love, happiness, freedom.
Collective Nouns

These nouns refer to a group or

collection of people or things.
Examples include team, family,
herd.
Concreate Nouns

Picture nouns that you can

touch, feel, and interact with –
tangible, physical objects.
"Table," "tree," and "computer"
fall into this category of concrete
nouns.
Countable Nouns

Some nouns are easy to count,

like "three apples" or "five cars."
These are our countable nouns,
the ones that neatly line up for a
headcount.
UNCOUNTABE NOUNS

On the flip side, there are things that

defy simple counting, such as "water,"
"happiness," or "information." These are
our uncountable nouns, often abstract
and immeasurable.
Possessive Nouns

These nouns show ownership or

possession. They can be
singular or plural. Examples are
Maria's (singular) and teachers'
(plural).
Compound Nouns

Compound nouns are formed by

joining two or more words
together to create a new noun.
Examples include toothbrush,
rainbow, firefighter.
