The following text for question 1
Once upon a time in west java, lived a writer king who had a beautiful daughter. Her name was
Dayang Sumbi. She liked weaving very much. Once she was weaving a cloth when one of her
tools fell to the ground. She was very tired, at the same time she was too lazy to take it. Then
she just shouted out loudly.
Anybody there! Bring me my tool. I will give you special present. If you are female. I will
consider you as my sister if you are male, I will marry you sunddenly a male dog, its name was
Tumang came. He brought her the falling tool. Dayang Sumbi was very surprised. She
regretted her words but she could not deny it. So she had marry Tumang and leave her father.
Then they lived in a small village. Several months later they had a son. His name was
Sangkuriang. He was a handsome and healthy boy.
Sangkuriang liked hunting very much, especially deer. He often hunted to the wood usying his
arrow. When he went hunting , Tumang was always with him.
One day Dayang Sumbi wanted to have deer’s heart so she asked Sangkuriang to hunt for a
deer. Then Sangkuriang when to the wood with his arrow and his faithful dog. Tumang, but
afher several days in the wood Sangkuriang could not find any deer. Then where all
disappeared. Sangkuriang was exhausted and desperate. He did not want to disappoint her
mother so he killed Tumang. He did not know that Tumang was his father. Tumang’s heart to
her mother. But Dayang Sumbi knew that it was Tumang’s heart. She was so angry that she
could not control her emotion. She hit Sangkuriang at his head Sangkuriang was wounded.
There was a scar in his head. She also repelled her son. Sangkuriang left her mother in sadness.
Many years passed and Sangkuriang became a strong young man. He wandered everywhere.
One day he arrived. at his own village but he did not realize it. There he met Dayang Sumbi. At
the time Dayang Sumbi was given an eternal beauty by God so she stayed young forever. Both
of them did know each other. So they fall in love and then they decided to marry. But then
Dayang Sumbi recognized a scar on Sangkuriang’s head. She knew that Sangkuriang was his
son. It was impossible for them to marry. She told him but he did not beliave her. He wished
that they marry soon. So Dayang Sumbi gave very difficult condition. She asked Sangkuriang
to build a lake and a boat in one night! She said she needed that for honeymoon.
Sangkuriang agreed. With the help of genie and spiritis, Sangkuriang tired to build them. By
midnight he had completed the lake by building a dam in Citarum river. Then he started making
the boat. It was almost dawn when he almost finished it. Meanwhile Dayang Sumbi kept
watching on him. She was very worried when she knew this. So she made lights in the east.
Then the spiritis thought that was already dawn. It was time for them to leave. They left
Sangkuriang alone. Without their help he could not finish the boat.
Sangkuriang was angry. He kicked the boat. Then the boat turned upside down. It, leter,
became Mounth Tangkuban Perahu. Which means an upside-down boat. From a distant the
mount really looks like an upside down boat.

The following text for question 2
The old witch locked Hansel in a cage and set Gretel to clean the house. She planned to eat
them both. Each night the children cried and begged the witch to let them go.
Meanwhile, at home, their stepmother was beginning to wish she had never tried to get rid of
the children. “I must find them,” she said and set off into the forest.
Many hours later, when her feet were tired from walking and her lips were dry from thirst,
she came to the cottage belonging to the witch. The stepmother peeped through the window.
Her heart cried out when she saw the two children.
She picked up the broom leaning against the door and crept inside. The witch was putting
some stew in the oven when the stepmother gave her an almighty push. The witch fell into
the oven and the stepmother shut the door.
‘Children, I have come to save you,’ she said hugging them tightly. I have done a dreadful
thing.
I hope in time you will forgive me. Let me take you home and become a family again. They
returned to their home and the stepmother became the best mother anyone could wish to
have, and of course they lived happily ever after!

they both wanted to go to America and they didn’t have enough money to take Snow White.
Snow White didn’t want her uncle and aunt to do that so she decided that it would be best if she
ran away. The next morning she ran away into the woods. She was very tired and hungry. Then
she saw a little cottage. She knocked but no one answered so she went inside and fell asleep.
Meanwhile, the seven dwarfs were coming home from work. There they found Snow White
sleeping. Then Snow White woke up. She saw the dwarfs.
The dwarfs said, “What is your name?”
Snow White said, “My name is Snow White.”
Then, Snow White told the dwarfs the whole story.
The dwarfs said, “If you want, you may live here with us.”
Snow White answered, “Oh, could I? Thank you.”
Finally, Snow White and the seven dwarfs lived happily ever after.

One day, a mouse deer was walking by the river. He was very starving because he hadn't eaten
since morning. It was midday. But he found nothing in the land but dying trees. "Huh... I hate

Across the river, there was green grassland, with young leaves. 'Hmm.. it seems delicious'
imagined the mouse deer, 'but how can I get there? I can't swim, the current is very rapid?'
The mouse deer was figuring out the way how to reach there. Suddenly, he jumped to the
air,'aha.: he then walked to the edge of the river. He didn't see the reflection because the water
flowed very fast. He dipped one of his fore legs into the water. A few moment later, appeared
Mr. Crocodile showing his sharp teeth. He then laughed, "Ha... ha... ha, you can't run away from
me, You'll be my tasty lunch!" said the crocodile.
"Of course I can't. You are very strong, Mr. Croco," replied the mouse deer frightenedly. Then,
the other crocodiles approached moving slowly. They approached the edge of the river.
"But, before you all have a party, I wonder how many your members are there in the river. If I
know your number exactly, I can distribute my meat evenly,"said the mouse deer.
"Oh...o, great, good idea! But we are a large group, I can't count it precisely," Mr. Croco
moaned. "Leave it to me, and I can make it for you!" Now, can you ask the others to line up,
from one edge to the other edge of the river? The mouse deer requested. Then the crocodiles
arranged themselves in line from one edge to the other edge of the river. The mouse deer jumped
to the body of one crocodile to the others while he was counting, 'one, two, three; and so forth up
to ten. Then at last he arrived at grassland, and he thanked to the dumb crocodiles

“Talaga Warna”
Long ago there was a kingdom in West Java. The kingdom was ruled by a king called
Prabu.Prabu was a kind and wise king, and there was no hunger in his kingdom. But Prabuand
his queen didn’t have any children. It made them very, very sad. Then one day Prabu went into
the jungle. There he prayed to his god for a child. A few months later, the queen was expecting a
baby, and all the people in the kingdom were happy. Prabu and the queen loved their little
daughter and gave her everything. This made the princess a very spoiled girl. If she didn’t get
what she wanted, she became very angry. But even though the princess behaved badly, her
parents loved her, and so did the people in the kingdom. Day by day, the princess grew more
beautiful. When she was 17, her parents invited all the people in the kingdom to a party. Prabu
took their gift s of gold and bright jewels and had a a beautiful necklace made for his daughter.
On the day of the birthday, people gathered in the palace field. When Prabu and the queen
appeared, people welcomed them happily. The cheers were even louder when the beautiful
princess appeared. Prabu took the necklace. “My beloved daughter,” he said, “today I give this
necklace to you. It is a gift from the people of this country because they love you so much.”The
princess looked at the necklace. “I don’t want it! It’s ugly!” she shouted, and she threw the
necklace on the ground, where it broke into pieces. Everyone was shocked. Nobody spoke. They
never thought that their beloved princess would do that terrible thing. In their silence people
heard the queen crying. Everyone was sad and began crying,too. A pool of water formed on the
ground. Soon the pool became a big lake. The lake sank all of the kingdom. Today, people call
the lake Talaga Warna. It means ‘Lake of Colors’. It is located in Puncak, West Java. On a bright
day, the lake is full of amazing colors, which in fact come from the reflection of the trees and
flowers around it. But some people believe that the colors are from the princess’s necklace,
which still lies in pieces at the bottom of the lake.

Once upon a time there was a wife of a rich man fell sick, and soon she closed her eyes and
departed. Everyday, Cinderella went out to her mother’s grave, and wept, and she remained
pious and good .When winter came, the snow spread a white sheet over the grave, and by the
time the spring sun had drawn it off again, the man had taken another wife. The woman had
brought with her into the house two daughters, who were beautiful and fairy of face but vile and
black of heart. Since then a bad time for the poor step-child began.
One day the King gave orders for a festival and all the beautiful young girls in the country were
invited, in order that his son might choose himself a bride.When the two step-sisters heard that
they were to appear among the number, they were delighted, called Cinderella and made to help
them grooming, Cinderella obeyed, but wept, because she too would have liked to go with them
to dance, and begged her step-mother said” you cannot go with us, you have no clothes and
cannot dance.
When the step-mother and her daughters had gone away, Cinderella went to her mother’s grave
and cried, Shiver and Quiver, My little tree, silver and gold throw down over me.” Suddenly a
bird threw down a magnificent gold and silver dress to her,and were golden too. At the party her
step-sister and the step-mother however did not recognize her, and thought she must be a foreign
princess, for she looked so beautiful in the golden dress.

My elder sister and i are moving into a new house this weekend, so we decided to do shopping to
furnish the place.
First, we went to an appliance store not too far from our new house, and we bought a refrigerator
for the kitchen. You really can’t live without one because you have to keep your food cold or
frozen so it doesn’t spoil. Then, we bought a washing machine to wash and dry our clotes. We
don’t want to go to a laundromat to do this every week like we used to do when we are in a
boarding house. Next, we bought a rice cooker. We certainly need one because it can make life
easier. You simply put the rice into the cooker and press the cooking button, then you can do
other chores while the cooker is cooking the rice finally, we picked up a microwave oven. if we
are in a hurry and don’t have time to cook, we can place the food in the microwave and heat it up
quickly.
We haven’t purchased everything we need to furnish our new place, but we think we have the
basic appliances to make life more comforable for now.

Sura and Baya
A long time ago, there were two animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was the name of a shark and
Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea.
Once Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw a goat.
"Yummy, this is my lunch," said Baya.
"No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy" said Sura. Then they fought for the goat. After
several hours, they were very tired.
Feeling tired of fighting, they lived in the different places. Sura lived in the water and Baya
lived in the land. The border was the beach, so they would never fight again.
One day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food in the river. He was very hungry
and there was not much food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura broke
the promise.
They fought again. They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya’s tail. Baya did the same thing to
Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up and Awent back to the sea. Baya was
happy.

Budi has been a scavenger since he was seven years old so he has never had an education.
Even so, Budi often collects used books from the city’s trash heaps.
Budi could only read and do basic arithmetic when there was a social service that had

With the capital of old books from piles of city waste, Budi honed his basic knowledge.
