ACTIVITY 1A

SAMPLE IS THIS SAMPLE MATTER? REASONS

YES NO NOT SURE

Sugar granules / It has mass and

takes up space

Water / It has mass and

takes up space

Stone / It has mass and

takes up space

Air inside ball / It has mass and

takes up space

Leaves / It has mass and

takes up space

Smoke / It’s made up of

mixture of gases
and fine particles
which has mass
and takes up
space
Heat / It has no mass
and it doesn’t
take up space
Light / It has no mass
and it doesn’t
take up space

1. I observed that, from the first 6 given samples, they are all a sample of matter that takes up
space and has mass.
2. Each sample have a measurable mass except for the heat and light. For the solids, we can
simply weigh it and note its mass. For the liquids and gas, weigh it with the container and
remove it then weigh the container then subtract the mass of the empty container from the full
container.
3. Each sample occupies space except for the heat and light.
4. Smoke is made up of mixture of gases and fine particles which has mass and takes up space.
5. Heat and light does not have mass and it doesn’t take up space.
