Alloys are some of humanity's oldest technological achievements and new ones are being made every day. Take a

Did you know that a lot of the metal that we interact with day to day is not a single element. Let me
explain, you see, many of the metals we commonly see are called alloys. An alloy is a mixture of a
metal and other elements either metals or nonmetals. Steel, bronze, electrum and brass are all alloys
along with many others.
Alloys can be stronger than their constituent elements or have different beneficial properties like
decreased weight or increased hardness. Alloys are an important technology that allows us to develop
materials tailor-made to our needs instead of being stuck with only the natural properties of pure
metal.
Copper on its own is a very soft metal, but when it's mixed with a small amount of tin it becomes a
much more durable metal: bronze. Widespread use of bronze for tools and weapons caused ancient
civilizations across the world to advance significantly.
Iron is a durable but brittle metal but alloying it with carbon creates the far stronger metal: steel.
You're familiar with steel in car bodies or bridges or support beams and buildings or almost anywhere a
modern structure has been built.
Pure gold is beautiful but very soft and has almost no variation, alloying it with other metals like silver
or copper has been used to change its color and increase its strength for use in coinage and jewelry.
Alloys are some of humanity's oldest technological achievements and new ones are being made every
day. Take a look at the metals you see on a given day. The variety of alloys around you could be pretty
surprising.
