Musical Success Stories

Cathy
When Cathy was four years old, her father gave her a toy
keyboard. She taught herself how to play it and could
play many songs by the time she was six. When she was
eight years old, her parents bought her a piano and she
now plays in a youth orchestra in Bristol. She is going on
a European tour and visiting seven countries with the
orchestra later this year.

Tim
Tim loves singing. Last year he started his own band with
friends from school. Tim is the lead singer and is also
learning the guitar. Tim’s band plays at school concerts
and at the local social club. This year they even played
at a music festival. Tim’s band plays rock music and now
they want to write music and play their own songs. Next
month, he is going to enter a song writing competition!

Sylvia
Sylvia is a D.J. This means she uses lots of different music
and on the computer she makes new songs. Sometimes
she even records herself playing the guitar and piano
and adds them to the music tracks. She plays her music
at different events and sometimes performs at the local
shopping centre. Her music is a mixture of pop and
techno. She says she loves it when people dance to her
music, but she really hates dancing!

My trip to Australia
By Kerry Martin, age 11

I have just returned from a holiday to Australia and I’d like to tell you all about
it. I went with my parents and my brother, Adam. We went for three weeks and
we travelled to Melbourne, Sydney and Cairns.
We went to Melbourne first. It rained a lot in Melbourne, but that was OK
because there were a lot of buildings to visit and we could stay inside. My
favourite building was Melbourne Central. It’s a big shopping centre and it
has a big clock tower right in the middle. The shops were great!
Then we went to Sydney. The weather was really sunny and warm. My mother
and I climbed the Harbour Bridge, but Adam was scared so he and my father
went on a boat in the harbour. The view from the bridge was amazing.
Finally, we went to Cairns. It was really hot there! I went snorkelling at the Great
Barrier Reef and saw beautiful fish and other sea creatures. It was my favourite
place in Australia. Adam didn’t want to go snorkelling so he stayed on the
beach and read a book. Sometimes he is so boring! My parents said maybe
we can go back next year and visit other places. I can’t wait!
