Riverdale Mourns the Loss of Esteemed Community


Leader, John J. Johnson in a sudden departure

John J. Johnson, a prominent figure in the community of Riverdale, passed away on Monday at the age of
74. The news of his sudden departure has left us all mourning. John, known as a dedicated and
accomplished individual, will be always remembered for his contributions to both the banking industry
and public service.

Born and raised in Riverdale, John had an unwavering commitment to his hometown specially after
earning an MBA degree from Riverdale University in 1950. Which he later had his career in the banking
sector. Eventually, he became the President of Farmer's Bank, leaving an indelible mark on the financial
landscape of the community. And later in 1977, he was elected as the President of the State Bankers'
Association, further solidifying his reputation as a respected leader in the industry.

John's dedication to public service was equally noteworthy. He served as a member of the Riverdale
School Board from 1960 to 1970, which shows how he’s committed. later as a member of the Riverdale
City Council from 1970 to 1978. His commitment to education and local governance was evident in his
tireless efforts to improve the community.

Tragically, John's life was cut short during a heart attack he suffered while attending the Riverdale High
School basketball game against Geneva on Monday night. His passion for basketball stemmed from his
own college days, where he excelled as an all-conference performer for Riverdale University. Helen, the
wife of John, stood by his side throughout his remarkable journey. His funeral services will be held on
Thursday at 11 a.m. at the McGrew-Jones Funeral Home on Central Avenue in Riverdale. Following the
services, he will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery.

Johnson's legacy will forever be intertwined with the history of Riverdale. His dedication to his
community, remarkable career, and enduring love for his hometown will be remembered by all those
whose lives he touched. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
