In mathematics, a product is the result of multiplying.

For example, the product of 3 and 6 is 18.

Any integer bigger than 1, that is not prime, can be written as a product of prime factors.

We can use a factor tree to find the factors.

Example 1: Write 48 as a product of its prime factors.

Example 2: Write 120 as a product of prime factors.

Exercise:

1. Write each of these numbers as a product of primes.

(a) 28 (b) 60

(c) 72 (d) 153

(e) 190 (f) 275

2. Find the value of each letter.

A = ………….

B = ………….

C = ………….

D = ………….

3. Find the value of each letter.

A = ………….

B = ………….

C = ………….

D = ………….

E = ………….

4. Find the value of each letter.

6. Write each of these numbers as a product of prime factors.

(a) 15 (b) 152 = 225

(c) 28 (d) 282 = 784

What do you notice about your answers to (a) and (b), (c) and (d)?
If 96 = 25 × 3, write 962 as a product of prime factors.

7. Work out the product of each set of prime factors.
You must show all of your working.

(a) 32 × 5 × 7 (b) 23 × 52

(c) 23 × 32 × 11 (d) 23 × 72

(e) 24 × 32 (f) 52 × 13

8. Match each number to a product of primes.

You must use a ruler to construct a straight edge.
