Major HRM Activities

In the last twenty years the process of Human Resource Management has gone from being

a purely administrative function to have a strategic importance in relation to the growth and

development of organizations (UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, 2016; P 2) There are seven

main functions that are performed by HRM in any organization, although they are also functions

that can be performed by other managers, they are inherent in the nature of professionals trained

for HRM.( UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, 2016; P 3)

The first of these functions is Staffing, which consists of the entire staffing process, this is

done Development of a staffing plan, making the recruitment of required personnel through a

selection and finally negotiating a proper compensation for each employee. Precisely another

primary function of the HRM is the Compensation and Benefits Administration, which is

responsible for determining whether the compensation given to employees by the company, are

fair according to factors such as seniority in the company, education and others. In the same

sense, HRMs monitor the growth and professional development of their employees after they are

hired, developing training plans to increase their motivation and productivity in their work.

HRMs must watch over Worker Protection, that is to say, it falls within their

responsibilities to know and enforce the requirements demanded by law regarding labor safety in

the company's work environments. In the same sense, it must be attentive to changes and

adjustments in the laws that affect work, ensuring an updated legal environment that does not

harm the company.

Another fundamental function is the Development of Workplace Policies. The company's

policies allow for continuity while fostering an environment of equality and diversity in the

company's organizational culture. In the same sense, another function of HRM is Retention, i.e.

motivating employees to stay with the company. While salary is one of the main factors that

make a job attractive, there are other elements that influence the motivation of workers to remain

within the organization.
