OPERATOR MANUAL HCS-5 020310 5.7.x 03

GENERAL OVERVIEW
Interceptors
The interceptor creates pressure on the hull bottom plate directly
ahead of the transom using a blade. With only a few millimeters,
the transom edge raises and results in a high hydrodynamic lift. The
interceptor provides forces to optimize running trim and actively
dampen vessel motions.

Fins
As the vessel speeds through the water, the water moves along the fin body. If the fin is given an angle of attack, the
fin creates a lifting force acting on the vessel to reduce vessel motions.
To reduce roll motion when the vessel is stationary or moving at speeds below 4 knots, the fins do a strong paddle
to counteract each wave induced roll motion which result in reduced roll motions onboard the vessel.

HUMPHREE FUNCTIONS OVERVIEW

AUTOMATIC TRIM
Automatic Trim Control (AUTO TRIM) adds automatic adjustment of the
vessel trim to provide optimum running trim for the highest speed and lowest
fuel consumption. The trim and list can be manually adjusted by deploying or
retracting the interceptors and/or the fins.
AUTOMATIC LIST
When running in a straight course, Automatic List Control (AUTO LIST)
corrects the boat list to a set list angle, usually zero degrees. When the vessel
enters a turn, the system allows the vessel to heel naturally during the turn and
then continue to correct the vessel to the set list angle.
COORDINATED TURN
Coordinated Turn automatically adjusts the heeling angle of the vessel during turns to reduce the side forces for
everyone on board. The system continuously monitors the rudder position during the turn and the interceptor
blade movement is coordinated with the rudder movement. With a controlled heel angle, higher turning speeds
and better comfort can be achieved.
STABILIZATION
Boats are constantly exposed to waves that cause roll and pitch motions
resulting in reduced comfort on board. With Stabilization, the interceptors and/or
stabilizing fins are instantly actuated to provide lift which counteracts the vessel
motions and at the same time optimizes the running trim and list angle.

ZERO SPEED STABILIZATION

Zero Speed Stabilization reduces roll motion when the vessel is not moving. The
function can be used when the boat is at anchor or unanchored. Zero Speed can
be activated when the vessel speed is below 4 knots.

FISH HUNTING MODE

Fish Hunting Mode suits sport fishing boats and makes the vessel easy to steer
with a fish on the hook. When the Fish Hunting Mode is activated, the fins
gradually deactivate and rotate freely.

VESSEL MOTION MONITORING

Vessel Motion Monitoring (VMM) is used to monitor impacts and motion
sickness when the vessel is moving. The sensors in the RCU measures
3D-accelerations and presents live data on the display. On the VMM screen,
there is a yellow and a red warning level for the acceleration impacts.

INTERCEPTOR STEERING
Interceptor steering enhances the water jet steering by deploying the
interceptors and keeping the water jet thrust undeflected for small steering
commands. For larger steering commands, a combination of interceptors and
water jet deflection results in an increased steering force and reduced turning
radius. The steering interceptor position bar is seen in the main screen when
installed.

If the system is connected to a remote key switch, the system turns off when the engines are turned off.
NOTE!
If the vessel is moored for longer period of time, it is recommended to turn off the main switch or connect the
battery to a power outlet. Turning off the main switch will however disable the cleaning function so it is important
that the interceptor blades are completely retracted into the interceptor housing.

Short-term Shut Down

Short-term leave is when the operator leaves the boat over night or over a couple of days. There are some settings
that are recommended to activate before leaving the boat short-term.

CLEANING
WARNING!
If the cleaning function is activated, the interceptors makes a
full stroke every 24 hours. Make sure people stay clear of the
interceptors.
Cleaning is used to remove any initial marine growth from the interceptors when
the vessel is not in use. The CLEANING box is by default ticked, and is activated 24
hours after the system has been turned off. The screen indicates when cleaning is
active.

HUMPHREE FUNCTIONS
Automatic Trim Control
Automatic Trim Control (AUTO TRIM) automatically adjusts the interceptors
for optimum vessel trim depending on the vessel speed.

TURN ON AUTO TRIM

1. Press the AUTO TRIM function key at the main screen.
The blue trim lines are extended to indicate the interceptor deployment
applied by the auto trim function. The black bars indicate actual
interceptor position.

2. Use the TRIM Forward or TRIM Aft to manually compensate for different
load conditions.
The inner blue line will separate from the outer blue lines, to indicate the
total amount of trim.

3. Use the LIST keys to manually compensate for different loads and/or side
wind conditions.
NOTE!
If GPS signal is lost, AUTO TRIM will switch off. They can be manually
adjusted while the speed signal is absent.

TIPS & TRICKS

● It is recommended to keep AUTO TRIM turned ON.

CALIBRATE AUTO TRIM CURVES

There are four AUTO TRIM curves that can be set to different load conditions. The calibration of the curves is
normally done during initial sea trials.
1. Go to MENU/AUTOMATIC TRIM CONTROL.
1. Navigate to the desired curve and press SELECT to activate that curve.
2. Press EDIT to edit the curve.
3. Use the LIST keys to move the cursor to the desired speed.
4. Use the TRIM keys to change the interceptor deployment at the particular speed.
5. Press SAVE.
6. Press NAME to edit the name of the curve.

MANUAL TRIM
The manual trim lets the operator manually change the trim and list of the
vessel. The TRIM keys adjusts the trim angle of the vessel by deploying or
retracting the interceptors.
The amount of trim is indicated by a blue line and in percent below the
indicator. The black bars indicate the interceptors position on port and
starboard side.
Use the LIST keys to adjust the list angle by deploying the interceptors on one
side, and retracting on the opposite side. The total amount of trim will be kept
unchanged, but the black interceptor bars will separate from the blue trim lines.

18
OPERATOR MANUAL HCS-5 020310 5.7.x 03

Automatic List Control

Automatic List Control (AUTO LIST) automatically adjusts the vessel’s list angle to compensate for cross winds or
asymmetric load conditions.

TURN ON AUTO LIST

1. Press the AUTO LIST function key at the main screen.
AUTO LIST will then be replaced by SET LIST on the main screen. SET LIST
is the desired heel angle of the vessel. SET LIST is normally 0.0° for running
at even keel.
INTERCEPTORS
● AUTO LIST is automatically activated when the speed exceeds 9 knots.
● AUTO LIST is automatically deactivated when the speed drops below 7.5
knots. The interceptors returns to neutral position.
FINS.
● AUTO LIST is automatically activated when the speed exceeds 14 knots.
● AUTO LIST is automatically deactivated when the speed drops below 12.5
knots.

2. Use the LIST keys to manually set the desired SET LIST from port 4° to starboard 4°.
If the speed drops below 4 knots, the SET LIST automatically switches back to 0.0°. After a turn, SET LIST will
also switch back to 0.0° to make sure that the vessel runs even keel.

SENSITIVITY
The SENSITIVITY can be increased for faster list control if the compensation is considered slow when the boat
enters a new load condition or wind angle. The range of Automatic List Sensitivity is from -20 to 10.

1. Navigate to MENU/AUTOMATIC LIST CONTROL.

2. Set the SENSITIVITY using the PLUS/MINUS function keys.

Default value is -5.

NOTE!
If the speed GPS signal is lost, AUTO LIST will automatically be switched off. The LIST offset will slowly adjust to 0.

TIPS & TRICKS

● It is recommended to keep AUTO LIST turned ON.
● To reduce slamming in quartering head sea, use SET LIST to make the bow cut the waves.
● Default setting is -5 and works for most vessels. A bigger vessel (over 80 ft) with a slower rolling period can
generally use a higher sensitivity for faster AUTO LIST operation.
● If the auto-pilot is not working correctly, try decreasing the SENSITIVITY until the auto-pilot seems to work
again. If it doesn’t help to decrease the SENSITIVITY, the auto-pilot must be
re-calibrated with AUTO LIST turned ON.
● Some vessels can start to roll back and forth in calm water if the sensitivity is
set too high. Lower the sensitivity for a slower operation.

The system gives a warning when the sensitivity exceeds 5.

19
OPERATOR MANUAL HCS-5 020310 5.7.x 03

Coordinated Turn
Coordinated Turn automatically adjusts the heeling angle of the vessel during turns to reduce the side forces for
people on board. The vessel’s turning ability is significantly improved as a result of the interceptor steering force. A
rudder input bar is additionally shown on the main screen.

With Coordinated Turn Without Coordinated Turn

SETTINGS
See Setup Manual.

20
OPERATOR MANUAL HCS-5 020310 5.7.x 03

Stabilization
STABILIZATION automatically dampens the pitch and roll motions to
compensate for induced wave motions.
Turn on STABILIZATION by pressing the ACTIVE function key at the main
screen.
The settings for STABILIZATION can be found in MENU/STABILIZATION.

PITCH CONTROL
STABILIZATION to stern and bow is called PITCH CONTROL.
It is recommended to tick the PITCH CONTROL box. When the PITCH
CONTROL box is ticked, the PITCH DAMPING SENSITIVITY can be adjusted
from -20 to +20.

ROLL CONTROL
STABILIZATION to port and starboard is called ROLL CONTROL.
It is recommended to tick the ROLL CONTROL BOX. When the ROLL
CONTROL box is ticked, the ROLL DAMPING SENSITIVITY can be adjusted
from -20 to +20.

TIPS & TRICKS

● A low sensitivity will make the system react more slowly to vessel
movements and a high sensitivity enables faster reactions.
● If the strongest possible pitch damping is preferred, increase the PITCH
DAMPING SENSITIVITY or untick the ROLL CONTROL box.
● If the strongest possible roll damping is preferred, untick PITCH CONTROL or increase the ROLL DAMPING
SENSITIVITY.
● If the auto-pilot is not working correctly, try decreasing the ROLL CONTROL until the auto-pilot seems to
work again.
● If it doesn’t help to decrease the ROLL CONTROL, the auto-pilot must be re-calibrated with ALL Humphree
functions turned ON.

Calm seas:
● AUTO LIST turned ON.
● STABILIZATION turned OFF.

Medium and rough seas:

● Both AUTO LIST and STABILIZATION turned ON.
With both AUTO LIST and STABILIZATION, the system will strive to keep the vessel on even keel. This results
in less roll damping because part of the force is used to keep the vessel even keel.
NOTE!
For catamaran hulls, when STABILIZATION is ON, it is recommended to have AUTO LIST turned OFF.

Maximum damping:
● AUTO LIST turned OFF.
● STABILIZATION turned ON.
For maximum damping force, keep AUTO LIST turned OFF. The system uses full force to dampen roll and pitch
motions. The system will not strive to keep the vessel at even heel, but use all force for damping.

OPERATOR MANUAL HCS-5 020310 5.7.x 03

Interceptor Steering

Operators can experience significant power loss when steering the vessel. The power losses result in higher fuel
consumption and speed loss during course corrections. Interceptor Steering equals faster response to a steering
command, getting a straighter course, improved fuel economy, and less wear of the water jet steering gear.
The steering force typically corresponds to a bucket deflection of between 5 and 15 degrees. For larger steering
commands, the water jet buckets will start to deflect, and the interceptors will contribute with increased steering
force at high speeds.
Interceptor Steering is usually setup to be controlled by an external system. For more information and instructions
on how to set the interceptor steering curve, see Setup Manual.

STANDBY
When interceptor steering is not requested by the external system.

STEERING OFF
When interceptor steering is requested by the external system but because for
some reason, the interceptor steering function is not working properly.
NOTE!
Without the following, the interceptor steering function will not work properly:
● Make sure there is a GPS signal.
● Make sure that the Rudder Input Signal Calibration is complete.
● Make sure that the servos are correctly installed and that there are no

Vessel Motion Monitoring

Vessel Motion Monitoring (VMM) is used to monitor impacts and motion sickness when the vessel is moving. The
sensors in the RCU measures 3D-accelerations and present live data on the display. On the VMM screen, there is a
yellow and a red warning level for the acceleration impacts. The warning levels must be set up in the menu. The VMM
transit screen is not operational until the warning levels have been setup.
Use the Center Key to toggle between screens at the control panel.

The MAX IMPACT displays the highest impact that the system has detected during
the driving cycle.

The LAST IMPACT displays the latest detected impact.

The ACCELERATION displays the highest acceleration measured by the
accelerometer each second.

The live acceleration is displayed graphically in the acceleration bar. On the right side of the acceleration bar, there is
an impact counter for each alarm level.

The Motion Sickness Index (MSI) estimates the percentage of the passengers
aboard that experiences motion sickness within two hours.

Reset MAX IMPACT and LAST IMPACT by pressing RESET.
