Edu 414 – Classroom Management

Your Classroom Management Plan

This classroom management plan is based on a first grade classroom.

Classroom Goals
Write your classroom goals in the form of what students will be able to successfully do at the end
of the year or semester.
 Students will be able to put their bags, books, and jackets away when entering the room
without being reminded.
 Students will be able to come in and unpack their bags and know where to hand
everything in
 Students will be able to come in and complete any morning work
 Students will be able to hand in assignments on time.
 Students will be able to collaborate with other students while working on assignments or
projects.
 Students will be able to line up correctly

Guidelines for Success


Write the list of attitudes & traits that ensure the student’s success (i.e. Be Safe, Be Respectful,
etc.)

 Students will be respectful of one another.


 Students will make safe choices in the classroom
 Students will listen to directions for all assignments
 Students will come in everyday wanting to learn

Classroom Rules
Outline the important student behaviors that will ensure your class runs efficiently.
 Students will listen to each other
 Students will not call each other names
 Students will not bully each other
 Students will listen to the teacher
 Students will follow the rules
 Students will not talk while someone else is talking.
 Students will do any work the teacher assigns during the school day or any homework
 Students will respect the teacher
 Students will line up appropriately
 Students will do their assigned classroom jobs (will change every two weeks)
o Messenger-deliver anything the teacher needs to deliver
o Classroom cleaners-sweep daily, clap out erasers (chalkboard only),
o Desk cleaners -wipe down desks
o Teacher helper-hands out worksheets and test
o Absent buddies- writes down anything that someone absent missed.
o Collectors-collects any worksheets or assignments
o Line leader- leads line
o Caboose-is in the back of line

Consequences for Classroom Rule Violations


List the range of corrective consequences that you may assign if rules are violated.
 Students will be given a look
 Students will be reminded of what they should be doing
 Students name will be said to try to draw them back in
 Student’s name will be said.
 Student’s desk will tapped.
 If unwanted behavior continues after multiple reminder parents will be contacted
Classroom Procedures
Entering the classroom, putting away coats, bags, getting settled in seats.
Outline exactly what students should do from the time they enter the room until you are ready to
begin class.
 Students will enter the room and empty their schoolbags and put them and
all their belongings, lunch, jackets, and schoolbag, in their assigned
number cubbies
 They will write their name on the attendance sheet
 They will hand in their homework in the designated subject folder
 They will sit in their desks and get out the materials they need for the day
 They will see a list of journal prompts: tell a story, what did you do after
school yesterday?, what are you doing after school today?, on the board
and will do one in their journal until class starts
 If they finish their journal they can work on their if I’m done packets or
any work they need to catch up on

Lateness
Provide your definition of on time and late and identify the consequences for being late.

 My definition of being on time is arriving either before the bell or right as the bell
rings.
 My definition of being late is coming in after the bell rings. I will not punish a child
for being late as it is not their fault for being late, especially in grades Pre-k-8. It will
be documented when a student is late.
 Parents may need to be contacted if a problem is suspected.
Activities

Outline the activities that students will be engaging in during a typical week. These can include
reading groups, learning centers, etc. You can generalize here.
 Reading centers everyday
 Math centers at least twice a week
 Go noodles for brain break
 I Ready and Starfall at least twice a week
 Art activities to reinforce lessons
 Jack Hartman songs to reinforce lessons
 Kid writing everyday
Assignments
Identify how you will assign work and how students will know what they are to do each day.
Also define how they should keep track of what they need to do for homework and long range
assignments.
 The homework will be on the board each day for them to copy after lunch and will be on
google classroom.
 Students will have a homework book where they will write the homework for each day
 On-going assignment due dates will be written on the homework board each day

Turning in Assignments
Identify where and how students turn in class work & homework. Specify if students are the
check off completed work.
 Students will turn in homework in the designated subject folder.
 Students will put any assignments done during the day that I want collected in the turn in
bin
Returning Assignments to Students
Detail your policies on how you will return completed work to your students.
 Completed work will be either graded or have a star on it
o Any needed correction will either result in points being deducted if graded or just
corrected on the assignment.
 Every Friday all work collected will be given back to students

Late, Missing or Incomplete Assignments


Outline the maximum number of late assignments you will accept, along with penalties and time
limits for late work.
 Talk to the child and ask them why it is not done and depending on the
reason I will tell them how long they have to bring it in
o If they just forgot they will have a day
o Any other reason will be discussed.
 After the student has handed in assignments late 5 times, I will contact the parents

Returning From Absence


Outline what students will need to do when returning after an absence.
° How to find out what they missed
 My absent buddies will right down missing assignments on a sheet of paper
 Any worksheets they missed along with the missed assignments paper will be in
their absent folder on their desk
° How long they have to make up assignments
 Will discussed with student (depends on why they were absent)
 No more than a week is preferred for children who were out sick for 1-3 days
° What to do if they miss a test
 Will be discussed with students (depends on why they were absent)
 No more than a week is preferred for children who were out sick for 1-3 days

Communication Procedures with Parents/Guardians


Identify if you will have regular communication with families that you initiate.
 Parents/Guardians will be contacted for both good and unwanted behavior.
 If an unwanted behavior is consistent, I will contact parents/Guardians.
 If a student exhibits consistent impressive, good behavior I will contact
parents/Guardians as well.
 When parents are contacted the contact will be logged on paper and a follow up email of
what we discussed will be sent

End of the Day


Specify how you will end class, any responsibilities your students may have, and how you will
dismiss the students.

 I will have written on the board next to the homework what they need to bring home.
 I will also read the list and tell them to check they have everything on their desk.
 I will tell them what worksheets they can put in their take home folder to bring home.
 I will then dismiss their numbers like “1-5 go get your things.”
 After they get their things, they will pack what is on their desk
 After they are done packing they will sit in their seats till their line is called (bus, car
riders, walkers, after care)

Classroom Set Up
At the end of your plan, provide a design of your “dream” classroom. Be sure to label each area
of the room Use the Draw feature of Word to do so or draw your own and scan it into your
document.
