BOMA'S EXPERIENCES OF ADVERSITY AND SUFFERING
INTRODUCTION

In this story, we tried to understand what was going on in Boma’s life. When we looked at it
together as a group, we realized that Boma was going through a tough time. First, Boma’s
favorite goats got sick, and he didn’t know why. Then, a dangerous snake showed up in his
house, scaring His family. On top of all that, Boma’s daughter had a scary accident with a taxi,
but luckily, she didn’t get seriously hurt.
From this story, we learned that adversity means facing hard challenges and complicated times.
It’s something that can happen to lots of people and families. It can make life tough, so it’s
important to know how to handle it and stay strong.

PROBLEM DEFINITION

The big problem we want to talk about, just like in Boma’s story, is the adversity faced by Boma
mainly his family. Boma had a lot of bad things that happened to him, like his goats getting sick,
a dangerous snake in his house, and his daughter’s accident with a taxi. We want to figure out
how people, including Boma, can make sense of these tough situations and how they can respond
to them in a way that makes them stronger, more purposeful, and full of faith.

Why is this question so important? Well, tough times are a part of life, and if we don’t know how
to handle them, they can really bring us down. They can make us feel sad and stressed, and hurt
our relationships with others.
Let us have a practical example: The book of James 2:14-17 says: “What good is it, my brothers
or my sisters if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?
Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, 'Go in
peace; keep warm and well fed, ' but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In
the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
This passage from the book of James emphasizes the importance of pairing with practical
actions. It illustrates that alone may not be sufficient when dealing with adversity, and practical
deeds are essential to make a positive impact and effectively address the challenges individuals
may face in their lives.
But if we can find a way to understand and deal with tough times better, it can actually make us
feel happier, help us grow as people, improve our relationships, and give us hope.
We can have an example from the book of 1 Peter 5:10 that says: “And the God of all grace, who
called you to his glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you
and make you strong, firm steadfast.”
This passage from 1 Peter, acknowledges that suffering or tough times are a part of life but
assures that through faith and endurance, individuals can find strength, resilience, and
restoration. It reflects the idea that enduring challenging moments can lead to personal growth
and greater steadfastness.
This growth can ultimately contribute to improved relationships and a sense of hope,
emphasizing that even in difficult times, there can be a path to happiness a growth. Even though
we might not have all the answers yet, it’s really important to try and figure out how to face
tough times because they happen to everyone, and we want to make life better for ourselves and
those surrounding us.

OVERALL GOAL OF THE PROJECT1

 Analyzing Boma’s Misfortunes: we will thoroughly examine Boma’s experiences and

challenges to gain a deep understanding of his adversity.
 Extracting Biblical Teachings: We will draw wisdom and guidance from the assigned
books (Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, and 2 Peter) to identify relevant teachings.
 Providing Practical Applications: We will explore practical ways individuals can apply
the lessons learned from Boma’s story and the Bible books to navigate adversity.
 Highlighting the Role of Community: we will emphasize the importance of community
support and how it can play a crucial role in helping individuals face adversity.
 Proposing Future Actions: We will suggest potential actions or strategies that individuals
and communities can take to better handle adversity in the future.

BRAINSTORMING THE PROBLEM

In Boma’s story, the central issue is the adversity he faces and how individuals like him interpret
and respond to it. Boma’s life has been marked by a series of hardships, including a mysterious
illness in his goats, a dangerous snake invading his home, and his daughter's taxi accident. These
challenges represent various forms of adversity that individuals and families commonly
encounter in their lives.

Adversity is a widespread and serious issue in society, affecting countless individuals’ families
in various ways. It can manifest as health crises, natural disasters facing adversity, and its serious
tragedies. News reports frequently highlight stories of people facing adversity, and its
seriousness is evident in its impact on mental health, relationships, and overall well-being.
Prolonged adversity can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, and strained relationships.
Recognizing the prevalence and seriousness of adversity in society emphasizes the importance of
addressing this issue and finding effective ways to navigate it.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES2

In this story, we noticed some important themes that we can learn from. He faces adversity and
tough times, like his goats dying, a snake in his house, and his daughter’s accident.
The Bible books we are studying offer wisdom related to these themes:

Hebrews: Faith and Perseverance

The central issue in Boma’s story is his struggle against adversity and mysterious misfortunes in
his village. This situation is akin to the message of two verses from Hebrews. The first verse,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6),
encourages trust in a higher power. Boma’s determination to confront village mysteries reflects
his faith in a guiding force, allowing him to move forward despite fear and uncertainty.

The second verse, “So, do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded” (Hebrews
10:35), promotes trust in a positive outcome. Boma’s unwavering resolve aligns with this idea,
as he seeks solutions and positive outcomes amid village troubles. Just as the verse suggests that
confidence will be rewarded, Boma’s determination implies that persistence in seeking answers
and solutions is likely to yield positive results.

In summary, Boma’s journey symbolizes unwavering trust and perseverance in the quest for
truth and resolution. His experience parallels the messages of these verses, emphasizing the
importance of trust in a higher power and the potential for reward when maintaining confidence
in the face of challenges. Boma’s journey exemplifies these principles, offering hope and
inspiration in the midst of adversity.

James: Patience & Spiritual Growth through Trials

In this particular story, The Book of James teaches us Spiritual Growth through Trials and
perseverance in several passages. Here are some key verses:

James 1:2_4 :
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3
because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish
its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
James advises us to submit to God, resist the Devil, and draw near to God. By following these
steps, We can overcome the influence of the Devil, experience God's closeness, and establish a
stronger connection with Him.(James 4:7-10 – So then, submit to God. Resist the Devil, and he
will run away from you. Come near to God and He will come near to you.)
James declares that those who endure trials with perseverance will be blessed. Those who stand
the test will receive the "crown of life" promised by the Lord to those who love Him,(James

The Holy Bible in the book of : Hebrews, James, 1 Peter and 2 Peter
1:12:"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person
will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him..")
James 5:7-11 :
"Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for
the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too,
be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near. 10 Brothers and sisters, as an
example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the
Lord. " As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's
perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion
and mercy..."
In summary, the book of James teaches us that enduring trials with joy, submitting to God,
resisting the Devil, and maintaining patience are integral aspects of the Christian journey. The
promise is one of maturity, completeness, and the ultimate reward of the crown of life. The
examples of the prophets and Job serve as inspirations, showcasing the compassion and mercy of
the Lord in the midst of perseverance.

1 Peter: Endurance and Hope

In the book of 1 Peter, we find that enduring suffering with faith and righteousness leads to
personal growth and a deeper connection with God. As mentioned in 1 Peter 2:21, suffering
refines individuals and molds them into the image of Christ. For example, the testing of one’s
faith, as noted in 1 Peter 1:7, confirms their identity as God’s children. This knowledge allows
people to face suffering with hope, recognizing its greater purpose.

In 1 Peter 4:12-19, it’s emphasized that Christians should not be surprised by suffering; instead,
they should rejoice in it as a way to share in Christ’s sufferings. However, Christians should also
evaluate the nature of their suffering, ensuring it aligns with righteousness. They are encouraged
to glorify Christ’s name in the midst of trials and entrust themselves to God, believing that He
will see them through.

For example, if Christians face challenges in the workplace due to their commitment to Christ,
they can find solace in knowing that they suffer for righteousness (1 Peter 4:15). This not only
deepens their faith but also allows them to glorify Christ’s name by maintaining their
commitment to their beliefs. In times of suffering, they entrust themselves to God, believing that
He will guide them through the trial, as expressed in 1 Peter 4:19.

2 Peter: Wisdom and Discernment

We are urged to be careful, grow in knowledge, and recognize false influences.
Bible Verse: 2 Peter 3:17-18 says, "Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be
on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your
secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

In 2 Peter 2:1-3, the passage serves as a practical example of the theme of being careful, growing
in knowledge, and recognizing false influences. Peter warns believers about the presence of false
teachers who secretly introduce destructive heresies and even deny the Lord. He underscores the
importance of vigilance and discernment within the Christian community, cautioning against
being led astray by these false influences. The passage highlights the need for believers to grow
in knowledge and maintain a strong foundation in the true teachings of Christ to avoid falling
victim to error and false doctrines.

This example from 2 Peter illustrates the theme of spiritual discernment and emphasizes the vital
role of knowledge in recognizing and rejecting false influences, ultimately guiding believers to
remain steadfast in their faith.

IMPORTANCE OF DEALING WITH ADVERSITY3

Understanding how to deal with adversity is crucial because it has many benefits:

 Enhanced resilience: Facing challenges builds resilience for future adversities.

 Personal Growth: Adversity fosters personal development and skills like problem-
solving and resilience.
 Improved Relationships: Shared adversity strengthens family bonds and support.
 Community Impact: Overcoming challenges can inspire and benefit the wider
community.
 Reduced Suffering: Effective adversity response lessens emotional and practical
hardships.
 Faith and Resilience: Maintaining faith and resilience equips individuals to face future
challenges confidently.
Addressing this question matters because it not only helps individuals but also makes
communities and society as a whole better. It leads to less suffering, more faith, and stronger
resilience, making life more meaningful and fulfilling.

HIGHLIGHTING THE ROLE OF THE COMMUNITY

In Boma's story, we see the vital role of community support when facing adversity. Boma's
challenges are made more bearable with the help of his family, friends, and neighbors. This
highlights that adversity is easier to handle when there's a supportive network offering
encouragement and assistance. Community support plays a crucial role in helping individuals
face adversity, emphasizing its importance.
