DMFD 2413 SEMESTER 1 SESSION 2019/2020

1.0 Objective

At the end of the experiment, students should be able to:


a. To observe system behavior when Directional Control Valve is used.
b. To observe system behavior when Pressure Relief Valve is used.

3.0 Background

A hydraulic drive system is a quasi-hydrostatic drive or transmission system that uses


pressurized hydraulic fluid to power hydraulic machinery. The term hydrostatic refers to the
transfer of energy from pressure differences, not from the kinetic energy of the flow. The six
basic components of a hydraulic system (Figure 1):-
a) A pump – supply pressurized fluid to system
b) A reservoir – keep fluid to be used in the system
c) An electric motor – drive the pump
d) An actuator – convert hydraulic power into mechanical power
e) Valves – to control fluid direction
f) Piping – carries pressurized fluid from one location to another

4.0 Hydraulic Components

Identify the hydraulic components below which will be used in this exercise.

5.0 Task

Task 1: Using the given components (Table 1) and layout (Figure 2):

a) Design a schematic circuit which will operate a double acting cylinder for extension
and retraction stroke.
b) Connect components to match the schematic diagram.
c) Draw the hydraulic circuit diagram complete with appropriate symbols.
d) Explain clearly the working principle of the circuit operation.

Task 2: Using the given components (Table 2):

a) Design a schematic circuit which will operate a double acting cylinder for extension
and retraction stroke.
b) Connect components to match the schematic diagram.
c) Draw the pneumatic circuit diagram complete with appropriate symbols.
d) Let the cylinder extend and retract, and stop the cylinder rod movement in the middle
of the extension and retraction motion.
e) Explain clearly the working principle of the circuit operation.
