SCRIPT
INT. AT HOME IN BED – MORNING

As MIA wakes up in the morning, there is an uncomfortable silence

as she gets dressed ready for school, there is a faint sound of
the morning birds acting as an alarm for MIA. The more she gets
ready, the more you can hear the rain from the harsh winter
weather. The rain sounds aggressive and unforgiving which makes
MIA dread her journey to college even more.

MIA slowly drags a jumper over her head, ruffling her hair but
she doesn’t seem to care as she puts her headphones on over her
unkept hair. The rain fades as the music is playing. This is the
first time we hear music. The camera cuts to over the shoulder
shot where MIA is skipping the songs to find the perfect song to
keep her company that morning. We can hear the music being
skipped. Finally, MIA stops on song which intensifies the sadness
from MIA.

INT. AT HOME IN THE KITCHEN - MORNING

The pop of the toaster is an awakening call to the audience as it

is loud compared to the silence we’ve experience so far, the
music is still playing as MIA is spreading butter over her toast,
again the spreading is a harsh contrast to the silence. MIA sits
down as we see the bustling of her family getting ready for work
and school.

MUM starts trying to talk MIA but she is completely oblivious to

her surroundings as she is too engrossed in her music and book to
notice the stress her MUM is under.

MIA grabs her bag and walks to the door still reading her book
while her MUM looks exasperated with her daughter.

At this point attention is drawn to MIA’S outfit which is a

mixture of blue and white colours to signify her innocence and
her inner sadness. The colour of the overall scene has a blue
tint to it which is not necessarily noticeable until later on.

MIA’S MUM comes to the door to say goodbye to her daughter. She
takes off MIA’S headphones to sort out her hair which is when the
sound of the rain can be heard again just as aggressive as
before. Visibly, MIA is annoyed that her headphones have been
taken off her.

INT. AT COLLEGE – MORNING

Still reading her book, MIA is isolated from the rest of the
class by her own choice as she likes her company and the company
of her music and book.

Across from MIA we see a group of boys all laughing together and
obviously being rowdy. All of them are wearing at least one piece
11

of black clothing apart from one. The camera focusses on that one
boy who is wearing a red jumper which could symbolise many
different hidden meanings. He disassociates from the group as he
looks up and his eyes lock onto MIA. His gaze lingers from lust
before his friends start to call his name and he seems to awaken
from his trance.

INT. AT COLLEGE – STARTING TO BECOME EVEVING

The college bell rings and MIA gets up, still reading her book
but getting closer to being finished and still listening to
music. ETHAN, the boy from before, also gets up to leave the
classroom to go home. MIA ends up walking into ETHAN, causing her
headphones to fall off her head. ETHAN apologises profusely and
picks up her headphones and places them back on her head. At this
point everything is silent as the headphones are no longer on
MIA’S head meaning we can hear the rain but it has a different
tone to it, we can also hear MIA’S hair being rustled as ETHAN is
trying to fix it. The rain is softer and starts to echo in the
background.

ETHAN and MIA stay looking at each as ETHAN is trying to sort out
MIA’S hair as it got messed up from the headphones falling off.

They both seem to be captivated by each other, MIA especially as

this is the first time she has properly seen ETHAN. Suddenly the
trance breaks as someone walks into the classroom. Embarrassed,
MIA says thank you and leaves in a hurry.

ETHAN is left behind watching MIA walk off.

The scene fades to black.

INT. AT HOME – EVENING

MIA is at home in her bed on her phone scrolling through

Instagram when ETHAN pops up on her feed. She goes onto his feed
and starts looking through his photos, again, at this point, the
rain starts but softly just like before, the music is still
playing but she slowly starts to take off her headphones, the
music quietens but doesn’t stop as she still has one side on her
hear. A consistent thumping sound starts as if it’s MIA’S
heartbeat.

At the top of her screen, a notification pops up to show that

ETHAN follows MIA back on Instagram. Slowly a small smile forms
on MIA’S face but she places her phone on the bed face down and
turns over in bed and goes to sleep.

The screen slowly fades to black as MIA falls asleep.

INT. AT COLLEGE – MORNING

MIA is back at college with her book again but this time she
seems distracted and can’t get into it. She keeps looking up from
her book and finds her eyes always wonder back to ETHAN. ETHAN is
still with his large group of friends, laughing and talking
12

loudly. MIA seems entranced by his confidence and her gaze

lingers a second too long when ETHAN looks up to see MIA staring
at him. He smiles shyly and looks down as his smile starts to
widen. MIA looks back at her book quickly and smiles while
reading but due to this interaction, she is completely distracted
and still can’t not get into the book.

This sort of interaction keeps on happening throughout the day

where MIA and ETHAN keep looking up at each other to see if the
other is looking and if they somehow catch each other staring,
they can’t help but smile.

The bell rings as the lesson ends and MIA backs up her bag,
everyone around her packs up and leaves without saying goodbye to
her, she is used to this as she doesn’t have many friends in her
class. While she is packing up ETHAN hovers behind his group of
friends as they tell him to hurry up, but he tells them he will
catch up with them.

When the classroom is empty, he goes up to MIA from behind and

taps her on the shoulder, MIA jumps. ETHAN takes off her
headphones and all music stops instantly. This time we hear two
heartbeats from both MIA and ETHAN. The rain is soft and gentle,
the clothes are rustling and chimes start to sound.

ETHAN offers MIA to go on walk with her if she promises to show

him the music she listens too.

MIA nods her head in agreement but cautiously as she is nervous.

EXT. WALKING OUTSIDE – AFTERNOON

The soft rain runs down both MIA and ETHANS’ faces as they are
laughing and gently pushing each other. MIA is scrolling through
her Spotify and both of them have headphones on as they are
listening to MIA’S playlist. ETHAN shows enthusiasm to all the
songs when they come across a song which stops ETHAN in his
track. He puts his hands to the headphones and pushes them as if
wanting the headphones to melt into his body. He starts to walk
and both of them are in silence.

The camera pans down to their hands as they ever-so slightly

brushing past each other until they end up holding hands.

The scene fades to black.

INT. AT HOME – MORNING

It’s the start of a new day and MIA is distressed. She is turning
her bedroom upside down, the rain is pouring aggressively, the
foley sounds are more aggressive than they have been up until
thus point. She is shouting at her MUM, still searching for
something we do not know.

She starts crying uncontrollably and her MUM rushes over to her,
holding her and trying her best to calm MIA down.
13

MIA looks at her phone and sees a good morning text from ETHAN,
still distraught she texts ETHAN back saying she doesn’t know if
she can come into college that day as she has lost her
headphones.

ETHAN does his best to console MIA by telling her it’s okay and
he will look after her. This convinces MIA to come into college
however, when she gets there, ETHAN doesn’t come over to her,
instead smiling almost embarrassedly at her.

Even more deflated, MIA goes to sit down and pulls out her book
from her bag. We hear the ruffle of the pages being turned over
and the laughing in the background of ETHAN and his friends.

MIA doesn’t seem to be able to handle all the noise she is

experiencing around her as she is used to always having her
headphones. Her face starts to crumple and tear drops wet the
pages she is reading. All the noise around her is more pronounced
than average and she puts her hands over her ears as the noise
seems to hurt her. She pulls out some old, wired headphones and
put them in her ears which seems to calm her slightly but is
obviously still distressed.

This is when ETHAN finally notices her struggles. He is full of

conflict as he doesn’t know whether to leave his friends or go
over and help MIA but that would mean his friends and the whole
class would find out about them and he isn’t sure if he is ready
for that commitment yet.

ETHAN decides not to go over to MIA.

INT. AT HOME – EVENING.

ETHAN texts MIA expressing his guilt for not comforting MIA like
he said he would but MIA ignores him.

The text notifications continue to sound as MIA falls asleep.

INT. AT COLLEGE – MORNING

The same thing happens again but this time MIA has some wired
headphones she found at home so luckily her ears don’t hurt from
all the noise around her. ETHAN, throughout the day, tries to
make eye contact with MIA but she refuses to look at him.

At the end of the day, ETHAN waits for MIA to finish packing up
and he walks over to her.

MIA sees his advances and quickly walks away but ETHAN grabs her
arm and she just looks at him and snatches her arm back. The rain
is the hardest it’s ever been and it is almost overpowering MIA’S
music.

ETHAN follows MIA out of the classroom.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE COLLEGE CLASSROOM – AFTERNOON

14

ETHAN runs after MIA shouting her name until he finally catches
up to her and spins her around and begs for MIA to listen to him.

MIA looks up at ETHAN and decides to listen to what he has to say

and all ETHAN can say is that he is sorry over and over again to
the point where he starts to get emotional to which MIA notices.
Grabbing his hand, she forgives him and tell him it’s okay. The
two embraces while the camera spins round them. The rain stops
and the sun shows through the clouds

INT. AT COLLEGE – MORNING

The next day at college MIA is the first person in class, reading
her book and she watches as her classmates follow in one by one
until ETHAN walks in with his friends.

The two make eye contact, MIA almost looking desperate, her eyes
begging for ETHAN to walk over to her. ETHAN doesn’t think twice
and without saying bye to his friends, he sits right next to MIA.

Immediately, relief washes over MIA and her shoulders drop and
her smile can’t help but show.

MIA offers one of her wired headphones to ETHAN who accepts and
MIA leans her head on ETHANS shoulder.

Around the couple, people start to look and whisper in confusion

as the two have never been seen speaking to each other but
neither seem to notice as they are too busy listening to the
music.

The scene fades to black and it seems like this is the end of
love story between ETHAND and MIA. However, the scene opens again
with a singular shot of a birthday badge which is pinned on MIAS
jumper.

EXT. SAT OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM AT COLLEGE – MORNING

MIA is sat on a bench outside college with a large group of

people crowding around her and all wishing her happy birthday
when ETHAN comes in and hands MIA a present.

She looks up at ETHAN and starts to unwrap the present.

ETHAN had bought MIA the same pair of headphones she had lost for
her birthday and automatically MIA jumps up and wraps her arms
around ETHAN’S neck in thanks.

The rest of the group start to gather around MIA and ETHAN all
laughing together.
