THESIS

The varieties of graphic design, and graphic

design itself, have a clear pattern in the way
they are created, contributing to the
rhetorical moves that make each final
productive uniquely effective.

RHETORICAL
GENRE? MOVES?
Rhetorical moves act as context
A genre is a category of any literary
or artistic production that carries behind the artistic or literary
the same elements across each production, pushing for a specific goal,
product in said genre (Dirk 250). outcome, or action unique to its
context (Swales 219).

Before creating a bakery logo for my teacher, I

researched some of the most popular bakeries
and created a mood board. There are clear
patterns of simple, elegant fonts, minimal color
schemes, pastel or natural colors, a combination
of typography and imagery, and less frequently,
some shape encircling the design. These are
some of the patterns that define bakery logos as
their own genre

My teacher had an existing logo already, but it was simply one

that he copied off the Internet. When it came to creating a new
logo, he had a couple of restrictions I had to follow; he wanted
the color scheme to stay the same as the original logo and a
combination of typography and imagery. He wanted his
customers to know that he sold all kinds of baked goods,
including bread, rolls, cakes, and pies. In addition, this logo was
going to be used for his packaging, on his website, as signage for
the building, and even as a painted mural in his shop. From these
rhetorical moves, I created about a dozen logos, each responding
to the rhetorical moves, but still being creatively different.

After sending in my samples, we decided to

combine two of them to create the final logo.
In the end, this logo fits perfectly under the
bakery logo genre because it has a simple font,
a limited and pastel color scheme, a
combination of typography and imagery, and a
shape encircling the design. I also responded
to the rhetorical moves by keeping the color
scheme the same as the original logo, including
multiple images of baked goods, and keeping it
versatile for all types of media/production.

Researching the patterns in a bakery logo genre, and

listening to my rhetorical moves, were extremely effective
in my process to create a successful logo.
