QUESTION ONE

You are provided with:

 A resistance wire mounted on millimeter scale

 Two dry cells in a cell holder
 A voltmeter
 A switch
 Six connecting wires
 Two with a crocodile clip at one end
 Micrometer screw-gauge

Proceed as follows: -
a. Set up the circuit as in the figure 1 and determine the total electromotive force, E, of
the cells.

Figure 1

Electromotive force E, of the cells = …............ V (1 mark)

b. Set up the circuit shown in the figure 2, connect the wire with clip on the mounted
wire at a length (L) of 10cm from the end marked A. Record the voltmeter reading in
the table provided in part (d) below:

c. Use the micrometer screw-gauge to measure the diameter, D of the resistance wire
hence determine the cross-section area, A of the resistance wire.

D = ………………. m (1 mark)

A = ……………………… (2 marks)

QUESTION TWO

You are provided with the following apparatus:

 A metre-rule
 A stop watch
 A retort-stand, clamp and boss
 One spring
 Two pieces of wood
 A beam balance (or electronic balance) – to be shared
 One mass labelled, M
 Marble
 Watch glass (about 10 cm diameter)
 Plasticine
 Micrometer screw gauge
 Piece of thread

Part A

Procedure
Proceed as follows:
a. Hang the spring vertically by clamping one end as shown in the figure 3. (use the
small pieces of wood to clamp the spring)

Figure 3
b. Measure the length of the unloaded spring, Lo and record it.

Lo = ………………………… m (1𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘)

c. Hang the mass, M at the lower end of the spring. Measure the length, L1 of the loaded
spring.

L1 = …………………………... m (1𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘)

d. Find the value of L such that L = L1 – Lo

L = ……………………..... m (1 mark)
e. Using the beam balance, determine the mass, M of the object.

M = ……………………. Kg (1𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘)

f. Using the thread and metre-rule provided, determine the circumference, C and height,
h of the mass labelled, M (figure 4)

Figure 4

i. Circumference, C = ………………. cm (1 mark)

ii. Height, h = ……………. cm (1 mark)

g. Hang the mass, M from the lower end of the spring. Displace it by a small vertical
distance and release so that the spring makes vertical oscillations. Measure and
record, in table 2, the time for 10 oscillations.

j. Release the marble from the edge of the watch glass to freely oscillate. Measure the
time taken, t, for 5 oscillations.

t = …………………… (1 mark)

k. Calculate the periodic time, T for the 5 oscillations.

T = ……………………… (1 mark)

l.
i. Measure the diameter, D of the marble using the micrometer screw-gauge.

D = ……………………m (1 mark)

ii. Determine the volume, V of the marble.

V = ………………….... (2 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)
