HOMESTEAD 27 of November 2023.

1
Summary.

Density difference between oil and water

(Lava Lamp).

This project is presented under the question: Which substance has

a greater density, water or oil? The main hypothesis being that water has a
greater density than oil, for which a homemade lava lamp is made,
measuring the Movement Variables and position of the water, using an
observation control, corroborating that “Oil floats in water because it is less
dense (a tablespoon of oil weighs less than a tablespoon of water)” Aquae
Foundation, (2023).

3
Declaration of the problem.
Which substance has greater density, water or oil?

Hypothesis.
Water is higher density than oil.

Background information.
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, (2023), “Density is a substance's mass per unit
of volume. he symbols most often used for density is ρ, Mathematically, density is
defined as mass divided by volume:

P=Density

M=mass.

V= Volume.` “

“Oil floats on water because it is less dense (a tablespoon of oil weighs less

than a tablespoon of water)” Fundación Aquae, (2023),

Materials:
 1 transparent container (8 ounces),
 2 ounces of water,
 6 ounces of oil,
 2 drops of coloring.
 measuring cup.
 effervescent tablet

4
Procedure
1 first place the transparent container and fill it with water.
2 add two drops of color.
3 then add oil to the transparent container with water.
4 Includes the effervescent tablet in the mixture.

Variables. The Movement and position of water.

Constant. Gravity.

Control. An observation control was used, nooting all the changes produced with their
respective time of occurrence.

Data.
3:17pm Start of the Experiment. The water, two drops of
color and the oil were mixed inside the Container.
3:47pm The colored water was at the bottom and the oil at
the top.
3:48pm. The effervescent tablet was added to the mixture.
Large green bubbles immediately came out upwards and
then downwards.
4:48pm The experiment ends with the colored water at
the bottom and the oil at the top.

Time Movement of water Position of water

3:17pm Out of moves Down.
3:48pm Bubbles Go up and down.
4:48pm Out of moves Down.

5
Resulted.
At the beginning the water was at the bottom and the oil at the top, when the
effervescent tablet was added bubbles came out up and down that decreased until the
end of the experiment.

Conclusions.

Observing all the changes produced with their respective moment of

occurrence, the hypothesis that water has a greater density than oil is correct.

Likewise, the problem is answered: which substance has greater density, water

or oil?

This result can be improved with other mass and volume measurement

devices.

Applications.

 Knowing liquids of greater or lesser density without mass measurement devices

(weight meters).

 Recreational experiments.

 Decorative uses.
