INSTRUCTIONS FOR BOOK REPORT, PART II

GROUP PROJECT
A Natural History of the Senses.
Book Report, part ii consists of two parts:
a) A very brief , 1-page summary of the chapter you have been assigned, and
b) An analysis of the use of Aristotle’s “Three Pillars of Argument”: ETHOS,
LOGOS AND PATHOS in Ackerman’s book.
PART A)
Read the chapter more closely and carefully and, at the same time note what seems to
be important from Ackerman’s point of view. What aspects of that particular sense
does Ackerman seem to consider most important/most praiseworthy/most essential
to an understanding and appreciation of that sense, especially in light of her stated
purpose in putting this non-fiction book together?
Each member of the group will select what they perceive to be the most important
aspects of the chapter and summarize it. Then, the group will collaborate to produce a
single page synthesis of the efforts each member has provided. (When you submit the
assignment, submit both the final synthesis as well as the five rough summaries that
contributed to that synthesis.

PART B)
From at least one sub-section of your chapter, select examples of the use of all three of
Aristotle’s “Three Pillars of Argument”: ETHOS, LOGOS AND PATHOS.
For pathos, look specifically at the diction Ackerman uses. Is it mellifluous, evocative,
poetic, hyperbolic, graphic etc. and does it elicit “feelings” in the reader, such as joy,
wonder, empathy, sadness, longing, etc.
I think you know what to look for when it comes to ethos and logos.
Be sure to quote accurately and provide page references.
This part can also be as little as one page.
Refer to your notes on our class discussion.
